Semi formal attire for a wedding: what it means, with 8 real looks tried on
Knee to midi, a dressy fabric, a suit with an optional tie. What semi-formal means on an invitation, where the guides disagree, and eight real outfits.

Semi-formal is the wedding dress code most couples choose and most guests misread. The Knot, in its study of what guests spend, says 60 percent of couples favor it, and Coveteur calls it "the most used and the least specific wedding guest dress code". Both halves are true. It sits between a suit-and-gown formal wedding and a casual one, and every etiquette guide draws that middle line in a slightly different place.
Guests care about getting it right, in both directions. In a YouGov survey, 79 percent of Americans said dressing casually for a formal dress code is inappropriate, and 77 percent said the same about dressing more extravagantly than the couple. Zola's 2026 First Look report found that 54 percent of the couples it surveyed use AI to answer etiquette questions like dress codes, which is more or less why a page like this exists.
So here is the definition, the points where the definitions disagree, and eight outfits you can buy, put on our mannequins by the same try-on you can use on your own photo. The pieces come from Zapaka, the shop our catalogue carries today. Under every render are their price when we last checked, a link to try them on yourself, and a marked link to the shop.

What semi-formal means, in one paragraph
For women: a dress that ends between just above the knee and a few inches below it, a midi, a dressy jumpsuit or dressy separates, in a fabric with some finish, such as crepe, satin, chiffon, lace, and a little sequin at night. For men: a suit, dark in the evening and lighter by day, with a tie unless the venue is a field or a beach. Emily Post lists a "short afternoon or cocktail dress", a "little black dress", a "long dressy skirt and top" or "dressy separates" for women, and a dark business suit, dress shirt, tie and leather dress shoes for men. The Knot puts it as "less fancy than formal attire, but more formal than casual attire." The navy dress above is the semi-formal evening dress in one picture: a tea-length skirt, cap sleeves, and embroidery that catches the light without turning into a gown. It looked as settled on the size 12 mannequin as on the size 8.
Where the guides disagree
Semi-formal has also moved. Gentleman's Gazette points out that the phrase once meant black tie, and Wikipedia notes that British usage still leans that way in the evening, while in the US it now means a suit. That history is behind most of the disagreements below.
| Question | The stricter answer | The looser answer |
|---|---|---|
| A floor-length dress? | No. The Knot wants hems that do not graze the floor; Adrianna Papell keeps floor length for formal | Yes, if the fabric is casual. Coveteur: "keep the silhouette or material on the slightly more casual side"; Emily Post allows a long dressy skirt |
| A mini? | "Still a little on the casual side" (The Knot) | "Maxis, midis, and minis all work" (Coveteur) |
| A tie? | Yes. Emily Post, and The Knot's own cheat sheet: "suit and tie" | Optional. The Knot's semi-formal guide: ties "are welcome, but not required" |
| Black? | "Black and charcoal generally feel too formal" (Green Wedding Shoes) | The little black dress is Emily Post's own example |
| Above or below cocktail? | Above: Green Wedding Shoes puts it between cocktail and black tie | Below: most guides, Proper Cloth among them |
When two good sources disagree, the time on the invitation decides. Emily Post's rule is the tiebreaker I use: "if the event is later than 6 in the evening, you'll want to err on the side of formality." At an evening semi-formal wedding, take the stricter column. At a noon garden ceremony, the looser one is fine.
Daytime or evening: the 6 pm line
By day, semi-formal means a dressy afternoon dress; Emily Post's wedding page lists one next to a suit or a pantsuit. The blush chiffon dress below is that dress: lace long sleeves, a pleated skirt that moves, and a colour that belongs in daylight. I put it with tan block-heel sandals for a garden.

The yellow floral sheath on the size 12 mannequin is sold as a wedding guest dress, and it is one: a fitted midi with a crossed keyhole neckline, cheerful without being a sundress. It is a summer and early-fall dress, and a daytime one. After dark it reads a notch too casual for most evening invitations.
At night, the navy dress at the top of the page or the little black dress below. Emily Post names the little black dress, and this one has a V-neck, a sheath cut and a pleated hem. It stops above the knee, which is the shortest I would go: The Knot calls minis "still a little on the casual side", and mid-thigh is where most guides draw the line. Burgundy satin heels with a bow keep it from looking like office wear.

Jumpsuits and separates
Emily Post lists dressy separates and a dressy pantsuit, and a jumpsuit is the modern version of both. The navy one above, on the size 12 mannequin, has a tie belt and straight legs. With silver sandals it is dressy enough for an evening reception, and it is the one outfit here built for dancing on a lawn. The rule for a jumpsuit is the rule for a dress: a fabric with some finish rather than jersey, and a heel or a dressy flat rather than a sneaker.
By season and venue
Summer semi-formal is lighter in fabric and colour: satin, chiffon and crepe for women, linen and cotton blends for men. The pale green satin midi below is a summer evening dress, with a cowl neck and a bias cut that falls straight. In August at 6 pm it is right as it is; in October it would need a jacket.

Fall semi-formal moves to jewel tones and sleeves: emerald, navy, plum and burgundy, velvet and lace, closed heels. Our guide to October wedding guest dresses has seven fall looks, and the one to fall wedding guest dresses covers the season month by month.
Outdoors, the shoe decides. On grass, a block heel of two to three and a half inches, a wedge or a kitten heel sinks less than a stiletto; Azalea Wang's guide to outdoor wedding shoes says stilettos above three inches "become increasingly problematic". At a barn or another rustic venue, a sleek boot is fine in the cooler months, as Southern Tide's guide notes.

A suit, and the colour follows the clock. The Tie Bar suggests navy, charcoal or maroon in the evening and lighter suits, linen or seersucker by day; The Black Tux puts light grey, tan and blue in daylight and navy and charcoal at night. The navy double-breasted suit above works at both hours, which is why I would buy it before any other. The shop styles it with a bow tie and the render kept it. For semi-formal I would swap it for a long tie in a colour, because a bow tie with a dark suit starts to read as black tie.
On the tie, The Tie Bar's rule is the practical one: wear it in the evening or at a more formal venue, skip it by day at a meadow, a farm or a beach. Shoes split the menswear guides too. Lace-ups (oxfords, derbies, brogues) are right everywhere; The Tie Bar keeps loafers for daytime, while Proper Cloth approves both. Brown lace-ups like the ones above suit a navy suit at any hour. What every guide rules out: jeans, polos, sneakers and a tuxedo.
What I wouldn't wear

- Zapaka Elegant Royal Blue Mermaid Spaghetti Straps Velvet Sequin Long Prom Dress $146 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
The royal blue sequin mermaid gown above is a beautiful dress for prom or a black-tie wedding. At a semi-formal one, it is exactly the extravagance most of that YouGov sample objected to: floor length and all-over sequins together read as black tie, and next to a couple dressed for semi-formal it competes with them. If you love a dress like this, keep it for the invitation that says black tie.
The other misses: anything white, ivory or cream, which Böhme's guide sums up as "anything that could photograph as white"; jeans, even dark ones; and a sundress with nothing over it at an evening reception.
Questions people ask
Is semi-formal the same as cocktail?
Close. Most guides put semi-formal one small step below cocktail, with the same dress lengths and a little more room for daytime fabrics and colours; a few, like Green Wedding Shoes, put it above. A knee-length or midi dress in a dressy fabric works for both. Our guide to cocktail dress attire for wedding guests covers the other side.
Can I wear a long dress to a semi-formal wedding?
Yes, if the fabric keeps it casual: a chiffon or printed maxi, not a satin or sequin gown. The Knot prefers hems that do not graze the floor, and a formal floor-length gown overdresses a semi-formal invitation.
Can I wear black to a semi-formal wedding?
Yes, especially in the evening; the little black dress is Emily Post's own example. At a daytime or beach wedding, a colour reads better.
Can I wear a short dress to a semi-formal wedding?
A dress that stops at or just above the knee, yes. A mini at mid-thigh is too casual for most semi-formal weddings.
Do men need a tie for a semi-formal wedding?
In the evening or at a formal venue, yes. By day at a garden, farm or beach wedding, The Knot and most menswear guides accept a suit without one. Wearing a tie is never wrong.
What shoes go with semi-formal wedding attire?
For women, a heel, a dressy flat or a dressy sandal, with a block heel or a wedge on grass. For men, leather lace-ups or loafers, brown or black. Not sneakers.
Can you wear jeans to a semi-formal wedding?
No. Every guide that answers the question says no, for men and for women.
