Fall wedding guest dresses: 14 looks we tried on, by dress code and month

Burgundy, cobalt, olive, sleeves for October, boots for the barn. 14 fall wedding guest dresses rendered on two body types, by dress code and month.

I rendered fourteen dresses on our two women's mannequins and judged them against the two things a fall invitation actually tells you: the dress code and the date. The Knot's latest study puts 35 percent of American weddings in September, October and November, and October ties June as the busiest month of the year. If you have a fall wedding to dress for, you probably have two.

What to wear to a fall wedding as a guest, in one paragraph

A midi dress in a deep colour, with sleeves or a layer you will keep on, in a fabric with some weight to it (satin, crepe, jacquard, knit, velvet from October on), and a shoe that survives the venue. Semi-formal is what 60 percent of couples ask for, according to The Knot, and formal or black tie only 19 percent; so unless the invitation says otherwise, a dressed-up midi is the answer, not a gown. The burgundy long-sleeve satin midi in the hero image is that dress, and it was the strongest of the fourteen on both mannequins.

The colours of fall 2026

The palette has not changed much: burgundy, emerald, navy, chocolate and olive are the fall wedding colours because they are the colours of the venues and the light. Anthropologie's fall drop is olive, chocolate, burgundy and purple. Pantone's palette for fall and winter 2026 adds Red Mahogany, Burnt Olive and a deep brown it calls Arabian Spice, which is to say the same colours with new names.

The one new colour is cobalt. Who What Wear called it the guest colour of 2026, replacing last year's butter yellow, and on both mannequins the cobalt crepe midi was the dress that looked like this year rather than a safe choice from any year. If you want one dress that photographs as current, that is it.

Two rules that do not move. White, ivory, cream and off-white are the bride's and nobody else's. Black is "generally appropriate", in The Knot's words, better after dark and at a formal venue than at a 1 pm garden ceremony; planners quoted by Today suggest navy for daytime and black for evening, and the renders agree. Red is an old wives' tale rather than a rule; The Knot's 2026 trend list calls it acceptable for Western weddings with a formal dress code. A deep red is safer than a bright one.

By dress code

Fall invitations use every dress code there is. What each means, from the people who define them, and the dress in this set that fits it. This is the short version; the most common code has its own guide, to semi formal attire for a wedding.

Black tie. Floor length, full stop. The Knot: gowns that "graze the ground or the top of the shoes". Emily Post allows a dressy cocktail dress, but in a fall venue a gown is the safer read. The navy long-sleeve column gown below is the black-tie dress of the set.

Black tie optional. "Floor-length evening gowns welcome, as are elevated midi dresses", says The Knot, and their advice to dial down for an afternoon ceremony is right. The burgundy satin midi or the emerald jacquard work here; so does the gown.

Formal. Floor length is "a safe bet", and an elegant cocktail dress or a sleek jumpsuit is fine. Emily Post's line is the useful one: formal daytime means a cocktail or dressy afternoon dress, formal evening means a long gown, and after 6 pm you "err on the side of formality".

Cocktail. "Formal dresses with shorter hemlines are the standard." The plum velvet knee-length dress is the cocktail dress here, and it is the one dress in the set I would wear to a November cocktail wedding without thinking. Our guide to cocktail dress attire for wedding guests has the rest of the code, fall included.

Semi-formal. The Knot calls it the most popular dress code and describes it as "quiet elegance": midi and wrap dresses, jumpsuits. The rust floral wrap midi is the semi-formal fall dress that 60 percent of your invitations are asking for.

Casual. A long sundress with a nice neckline, no jeans, no sneakers. In fall that means the sundress plus a jacket, which is the September look below. Our guide to casual dresses for wedding guests has the rest of the code, including where the guides split on jeans and sneakers.

September, October, November: the month decides the sleeve

The same invitation means three different outfits depending on the date, because fall in the US runs from 84°F in Atlanta in September to 26°F nights in Denver in November. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, afternoon high and overnight low, for the cities where weddings happen:

City September October November
New York 76 / 62 65 / 51 54 / 42
Chicago 76 / 57 63 / 45 48 / 34
Atlanta 84 / 66 74 / 55 64 / 44
Los Angeles 83 / 64 79 / 60 73 / 53
Denver 80 / 50 65 / 37 53 / 26

September is still summer at 4 pm and fall at 9 pm. A lightweight dress in a fall colour (The Knot suggests mustard, burgundy, olive) with a layer for the reception is the answer. The mustard linen sundress with a denim jacket is casual; swap the jacket for a cropped blazer and it is semi-formal.

October is the month for sleeves. The Knot's month guide says "long sleeves or layers" and suede accessories; the burnt orange knit midi with suede ankle boots is the October dress, and it was the most comfortable-looking render of the fourteen. Every second wedding you go to this fall will be in October, so this is the dress to own, and our guide to October wedding guest dresses goes through the month weekend by weekend.

November is a winter wedding with better light. Jewel tones, velvet, a real coat. The bottle green velvet midi is the November dress; it also works in December, which is where our winter guide picks up. Our guide to the November wedding guest dress goes through the month by dress code, on real catalogue pieces.

Long sleeves: the fall 2026 silhouette

Who What Wear's fall 2026 trend piece names one dress: the long-sleeved jersey maxi, after Gabrielle Union wore one in Zuhair Murad to a wedding this summer. Nine of the fourteen dresses here have sleeves, and the olive jersey maxi above is that trend done in a colour that will still be a fall colour in 2028. It is also the dress that solved the most problems at once on the mannequins: warm enough for October, long enough for black tie optional, and it packs flat.

The other 2026 trends worth taking seriously for fall: jacquard (The Knot says searches "skyrocketed"), capes and cape-back dresses, column silhouettes, and a scarf neckline that Who What Wear's stylist already says has "run its course". The emerald jacquard midi is the jacquard trend. I skipped the scarf.

Outdoor fall weddings: barn, vineyard, garden

Most American ceremonies happen outdoors, and in fall that means grass, gravel and a temperature that drops 20 degrees during dinner. Three rules from the renders and from WeddingWire's fall guide.

Shoes first. A block heel on grass, not a stiletto; WeddingWire says exactly that. At a barn, boots are allowed and western boots are expected; Lulus' fall guide says the same. The chocolate satin midi with tan western boots looked more at home in the barn render than any heel did.

Hem second. A floor-length gown at a vineyard is a dry-cleaning bill. Midi or knee length outdoors, floor length indoors.

Layer third, and make it part of the outfit: a cropped jacket, a wool wrap, a cardigan you chose on purpose. The cream cardigan over the chocolate slip is the version that photographs well; a fleece from the car is not.

Tights, boots and the long-sleeve alternative

From mid-October in the North, tights stop being a question. Sheer black tights with a black or jewel-toned dress and a black pump is the combination the bridesmaid stylists at Bella Bridesmaids endorse for cold-weather weddings, and it read as dressed up rather than practical on the mannequin. Opaque tights work with a mini and a boot; with a midi and a pump, keep them sheer.

Boots are fine at a fall wedding. A heeled suede ankle boot with a knit or velvet midi, a western boot at a barn, a sleek knee boot under a midi at a daytime ceremony. What to avoid is a chunky lug sole with a satin dress; the fabrics argue.

What I wouldn't wear

The floor-length gown to a semi-formal fall wedding. It is the single most common overdress, it drags through the vineyard, and on the mannequins it made the semi-formal invitations look like a costume.

Bright red in October. A deep red is a fall colour; a fire-engine red is a Christmas party in the wrong month.

And a sundress with nothing over it after September. The render of the mustard sundress alone looked right at 3 pm and wrong at 8; the jacket is not optional.

Questions people ask

Can you wear black to a fall wedding?

Yes. Black is generally appropriate, and best at an evening or formal wedding. For a daytime or garden ceremony, navy, burgundy or emerald read warmer. Skip black at traditional Indian and Chinese weddings, where it carries a different meaning.

Can you wear boots to a fall wedding?

Yes. A heeled ankle boot in suede or leather works with a midi from October on, and western boots are expected at a barn wedding. Block heels beat stilettos on grass.

What colours are best for fall wedding guest dresses?

Burgundy, chocolate, olive, emerald and navy, plus cobalt blue as the 2026 guest colour. Deep red is fine; bright red and anything white or cream are not.

Can you wear a short dress to a fall wedding?

To a cocktail, semi-formal or casual wedding, yes: knee length or a midi. Not to a black-tie wedding, where floor length is expected, and not a mini after dark in November unless there are tights and a coat.

Is velvet OK for a September wedding?

It is early. Velvet is an October and November fabric; in September it looks like you dressed for the wrong month. Choose satin, crepe or jacquard in a fall colour instead.

What is semi-formal attire for a fall wedding?

A midi or wrap dress, or a dressy jumpsuit, in a deep colour, with a heel or a dressy boot and a layer for the evening. The Knot describes it as quiet elegance. Not a floor-length gown, not a sundress on its own. Our semi formal attire for a wedding guide has the full definition and where the rulebooks disagree.
