October wedding guest dresses: 7 real looks we tried on, early to late October

Early October is still warm, late October is dark by six. Seven outfits you can buy, tried on our mannequins, from a rust floral midi to burgundy velvet.

Wear It On Me earns a commission on garments bought through affiliate links in our guides. That never decides what we recommend. Details.

October and June are the two busiest months for American weddings. The Knot's Real Weddings Study puts each at 16 percent of the year's ceremonies, and September to November together at 35 percent. On about two million weddings a year, that is a lot of invitations with an October date on them, and a lot of guests asking the same question: is it still a summer dress, or is it already velvet?

It depends on the weekend. So this guide is sorted by date rather than by colour, and every look in it is something you can buy. The six dresses and the suit come from Zapaka, the dress shop our catalogue carries today, and each was put on our mannequins by the same try-on you can use on your own photo. Under every picture: the pieces, their price when we last checked, a link to try them on yourself, and a marked link to the shop.

What to wear to an October wedding, in one paragraph

A midi dress in a deep colour, with sleeves from mid-month on, in a fabric with some weight: velvet, crepe, lace over a lining. Before about October 10, a printed midi with short sleeves, or a sleeveless dress with a layer, still works almost everywhere. After that, and anywhere north of Nashville, dress for the evening rather than the ceremony: the cocktail hour of a 5 pm wedding ends in the dark by late October. The burgundy velvet midi at the top of this page is the dress I would buy with one October wedding in the diary and no idea what the venue is like. It has half sleeves, it holds its colour in candlelight, and it fell the same way on both our mannequins.

The dresses here cost $109 to $139, which is where most fall guest dresses sit. In mid-September the median fall wedding guest dress was $79 at Ever-Pretty, $99 at Petal & Pup and $148 at Show Me Your Mumu.

Early October: still summer at four o'clock

NOAA's climate normals make the point better than any stylist. The average October afternoon is warm across the South and the West Coast and mild in the North; it is the night that turns.

City Average October high Average October low
Los Angeles 79°F 60°F
Dallas 78°F 57°F
Atlanta 74°F 55°F
Nashville 74°F 50°F
Denver 65°F 37°F
New York 65°F 51°F
Chicago 63°F 45°F
Seattle 61°F 47°F

Those are averages for the whole month, and the first weekend runs warmer. For a wedding on October 3 or 10 in the South, a printed midi is the right call. The rust floral midi below has short puff sleeves, a fitted waist and a skirt that clears the ankle, which matters on grass. It is the most October thing in our catalogue that is not velvet: the colour is the season, the fabric is still summer.

The olive chiffon halter, on the size 12 mannequin, is the warm-weather alternative and the one to think twice about. Sleeveless is fine for an early-October ceremony in Texas or California. In Denver, where the October night runs 28 degrees colder than the afternoon, it needs a jacket you chose on purpose. The ruffled high-low hem is pretty on the render and a little informal; I would keep it for a semi-formal or cocktail invitation, not black tie.

Late October: sleeves, velvet, and a cocktail hour in the dark

By the last two weekends the question is light, not temperature. Sunset times for October 2026, from NOAA's solar calculator:

City October 3 October 17 October 31
New York 6:36 pm 6:14 pm 5:54 pm
Chicago 6:30 pm 6:07 pm 5:47 pm
Seattle 6:46 pm 6:19 pm 5:55 pm
Los Angeles 6:35 pm 6:17 pm 6:02 pm
Dallas 7:10 pm 6:52 pm 6:38 pm
Atlanta 7:20 pm 7:02 pm 6:47 pm

Daylight saving time ends on November 1 this year, so the whole month is still on summer time, and the photos after a late-afternoon ceremony are taken in the last half hour of light. This is where sleeves stop being a style choice. Azazie's fall guide says long sleeves shift "from optional in summer to genuinely recommended in October," and after looking at these renders side by side I agree: the sleeved dresses look dressed for the evening, the sleeveless ones look like they are waiting for a coat.

Velvet is the other answer. Adrianna Papell's October guide calls it "particularly popular in October" and burgundy "one of the defining colors of October wedding fashion", which is why the two together are the hero of this page. If you have settled on the colour and want more cuts and shoes, our guide to burgundy fall wedding guest dresses has seven looks, a men's one included. The dark green velvet sheath below is the version with long sleeves and a closer fit. I paired it with burgundy satin heels with a bow, because green and burgundy is the one colour clash October gets away with.

One thing the try-on gets wrong here, on the burgundy and the green dress and on two different attempts: it flattens the velvet's pile, so the fabric reads closer to a smooth crepe than to velvet. The cut, the sleeves, the length and the colour are right. For the sheen, trust the shop's own photos, one tap away under each picture.

The black tea-length dress is sold as a mother-of-the-bride dress, and it is exactly what a guest wants for a late-October evening: lace three-quarter sleeves, a lined skirt well past mid-calf, no sparkle. Black is safe at an October evening wedding. Green Wedding Shoes calls it "one of the most reliable fall wedding guest colors", and it belongs to cocktail, evening and formal receptions more than to a noon garden ceremony.

The October colours for 2026

Burgundy, dark green, olive, rust and navy did not need a trend report; they are the colours of the month. The reports agree anyway. Green Wedding Shoes' September roundup says "espresso brown, olive green, and deep plum are the shades we're seeing most", 100 Layer Cake's fall list runs from deep burgundy and forest green to chocolate brown and terracotta, and Pantone's autumn and winter palette names Red Mahogany and Burnt Olive among its ten.

Two gaps, honestly: our catalogue does not carry a brown or a plum dress I would wear to a wedding this month, so neither is rendered here. If you want espresso brown, look for it in velvet or satin rather than in a print, where brown reads as a day dress.

By dress code

October invitations use every code there is. The short version, with the look from this page that fits each one:

  • Black tie: floor length. The olive velvet gown below, and nothing else to do.
  • Black tie optional or formal: the olive velvet gown, or the black tea-length dress with a heel.
  • Cocktail: the burgundy velvet midi or the dark green sheath.
  • Semi-formal, the most common code: any midi here. Our guide to semi formal attire for a wedding goes through it with eight more looks.
  • Casual or outdoor: the rust floral midi, with a flat or a boot.

The olive velvet gown is sold as a bridesmaid dress, which is worth knowing: at some weddings the bridesmaids wear exactly this colour. If the couple has shared their palette, check it first. If they have not, a one-shoulder floor-length velvet in olive is about as seasonal as a formal dress gets.

Halloween weekend and 10/10

The Saturdays in October 2026 fall on the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st. The Knot expects 10/10/26 to be one of the favourite dates of the year, and Halloween lands on a Saturday, which the Las Vegas county clerk already lists among the big wedding dates of 2026.

A Halloween wedding does not ask guests for a costume unless the invitation says so. The Knot's advice for one is black or jewel tones in velvet, lace or brocade, and a burnt-orange dress for a semi-formal code. The rust floral midi is that dress; the black tea-length with its lace sleeves is the evening version.

For him

A suit in a colour other than navy or charcoal is the easiest way for a man to look dressed for October. The grey-green double-breasted suit above is a two-piece. I kept the shop's mustard tie on the render because it works, and put brown lace-ups under it, which a green suit asks for more than black does. For a black-tie wedding this is the wrong suit; for every code below it, it is a good one.

Shoes, boots and tights

Boots are more at home at an October wedding than at any other. Azazie calls October "the most socially acceptable month to wear boots to a wedding", and Green Wedding Shoes has the sensible rule: boots for casual and outdoor weddings, heels for formal ones. Keep them sleek, with a slim shaft and a heel, under a midi; a chunky lug sole fights velvet.

On grass, a block heel of two to three and a half inches, or a wedge, sinks less than a stiletto. The tan platform sandals under the two early-October looks are that shoe. What stops me wearing them past mid-month is the open toe, not the heel.

Sheer black tights are fine from mid-October on, with a black or dark dress and a closed shoe. Under the burgundy velvet they look intentional. Under the rust floral they look like it got cold.

What I wouldn't wear

Most of what our dress partner sells this season is prom and homecoming: short, corseted, sequinned, often with a slit. They are fun dresses, and at an October wedding they read as a school dance. None of them made it into this guide.

Past that: anything white, ivory or cream; a sleeveless dress with no layer after sunset anywhere north of Atlanta; and bright orange with a pumpkin print unless the invitation asks for Halloween. A rust midi is October. A costume is a different party.

Questions people ask

What should I wear to an October wedding?

A midi dress in a deep colour, with sleeves or a layer after mid-October, in velvet, crepe or lined lace. For the first weekend in the South or on the West Coast, a printed midi with short sleeves still works.

What colors are best for an October wedding guest dress?

Burgundy, dark green, olive, rust, navy and espresso brown. Black is fine for an evening reception. Avoid white, ivory and cream.

Can I wear black to an October wedding?

Yes, especially in the evening and at cocktail or formal receptions. For a daytime outdoor ceremony, a dark jewel tone reads warmer. Skip black at traditional Indian and Chinese weddings, where it carries a different meaning.

Do I need sleeves for an October wedding?

Not for the first two weekends in the South or the West. From mid-October, and wherever the reception runs into the evening in the North or the Mountain West, sleeves or a layer you will keep on are the safe choice.

Are boots okay for an October wedding?

Yes, for casual, outdoor and most semi-formal weddings: a sleek heeled ankle or knee boot under a midi. For black tie, wear a heel.

Is it too late to order a dress for an October wedding?

Not in mid-September. Green Wedding Shoes suggests ordering two to three weeks ahead, which leaves room for one exchange. Trying the dress on your own photo first makes the exchange less likely.
