November wedding guest dress: what to wear, on 7 real looks
Long sleeves, velvet, plum and brown, a coat that belongs in the photos. What to wear to a November wedding, by dress code, on 7 real outfits.
Wear It On Me earns a commission on garments bought through affiliate links in our guides. That never decides what we recommend. Details.
What should a guest wear to a November wedding? A dress that would also work at a December party: long sleeves, a midi or longer hem, a fabric with some weight, in plum, burgundy, forest green, brown or navy, with closed shoes and a real coat. The Knot puts November wedding guest attire in one line: "Saturated jewel-toned dresses, velvet suits and crystal accessories are all stylish options for November wedding guest attire." The guides I read for this page agree on more than they do for October. They part ways on boots, on black, on tights and on how long the dress should be.
November closes the season. The Knot says 35% of couples marry between September and November, and counts November through April as the off-season: "Only 24% of weddings took place during this half of the year." The November weddings that do happen run large. In Carats & Cake's 2025 data, "November weddings in our dataset averaged 153 guests, the highest of any month, compared to a yearly average of approximately 126." In Texas, the same source adds, November is "the second most popular month at 12.1%." If your date is earlier, our guides to fall wedding guest dresses and the October wedding guest dress cover September and October; from December on, see winter wedding guest dresses.
Every look below is something you can buy. The dresses, the suits and the coat come from Zapaka, the shop our catalogue carries today, and each was put on our mannequins by the same try-on you can use on your own photo. Under every render: the pieces, their price when we last checked, a link to try them on yourself, and a marked link to the shop.

What to wear to a November wedding, in one paragraph
Sleeves, weight, a dark colour, then the coat. The Knot's fall guide is plain about fabric: "Heavier fabrics like jacquard, wool blends and velvet will keep you comfortable." WeddingWire puts the month before the season: "you don't want to wear the same outfit for a November wedding as you would in September." The purple dress above is the one I would buy with a single November wedding on the calendar and no idea yet what the venue is like. It has long sleeves, a boat neck with jewelled buttons on the shoulders, a belt and an A-line skirt, and it fell just below the knee on both our mannequins. The colour is the bright end of what The Knot calls "a jammy plum or sumptuous merlot": closer to violet than to plum, in the shop photo and on the render alike.
Zapaka files it as a work dress, which I count in its favour. In ThredUp's 2026 survey of wedding guests, "87% of Wedding Guests Admit to Buying Single-Use Outfits," and a "one-wear" wedding outfit costs an average of $137. This one costs $135 and goes back to the office on Monday. The black leather T-strap heels are the shoe The Knot asks for at an outdoor fall wedding: "Avoid thin stiletto heels that sink into garden paths or leave you feeling unsteady. Instead, opt for chunky block heels, dressy wedges or sleek leather dress boots."
Where the guides disagree
| Question | The stricter answer | The looser answer |
|---|---|---|
| Boots? | Boots "should be reserved for informal dress codes" (WeddingWire) | "Block heels or dressy ankle boots complete the outfit without appearing overly formal" (Adrianna Papell, for a semi-formal wedding); for outdoor venues The Knot lists "sleek leather dress boots" next to block heels |
| Sleeveless? | David's Bridal lists "Spaghetti straps alone in November" among the things that do not signal a fall wedding | "A sleeveless gown can work in November if the venue is fully indoors and well-heated" (Azazie) |
| Tights? | "If you're showing your legs, be sure to wear a pair of sheer tights (because bare legs and late fall don't go together)" (What Is She Wearing) | "Select tights only when appropriate for the dress code and venue" (Adrianna Papell) |
| Black? | Azazie: "Avoid black for traditional church ceremonies, certain cultural weddings, and casual daytime celebrations." What Is She Wearing: "Black is inappropriate to wear to a wedding in some religions" | "Black is always appropriate at formal events" (Azazie's November guide); a black cocktail dress "can look elegant at a fall wedding" (David's Bridal) |
| Floor length? | "A floor-length gown is the most season-appropriate choice in November" (Azazie) | The Knot mentions floor-length gowns only under formal and black tie; Adrianna Papell's semi-formal look is a midi with block heels or ankle boots |
Nobody in the boots row draws a line for every dress code, so here is mine. Sleek leather ankle boots under a midi are fine at a casual wedding, a barn wedding, or one that asks for semi formal attire for a wedding. At a cocktail wedding (our guide to cocktail dress attire for wedding guests has the whole code), I would wear them only if the ceremony is outdoors. At formal and black tie, a closed pump or a block heel. Adrianna Papell writes for November and WeddingWire for the whole fall, which may explain part of the split.
Plum, brown and forest green: the November colours
Lulus gives the fullest list: "Lean into seasonal colors like burgundy, chocolate brown, rust, emerald, navy, plum, and burnished gold." Charles & Keith adds "deep shades such as oxblood, midnight navy and charcoal". Brown gets the best argument. Adrianna Papell says chocolate and espresso act "as a softer, warmer alternative to black while maintaining a high level of refinement," and I think it is the most underused colour of the month. Azazie is the strictest on what to leave at home: "Avoid pastel or very bright colors as these feel seasonally out of place in late autumn."

The coffee satin dress on the size 12 mannequin is the brown version for a formal invitation: a high neck, short sleeves, ruching across the waist and a mermaid skirt that reached the ankle on the render. Azazie calls satin "the strongest fabric choice for November. It has weight, warmth, and a rich evening sheen." The short sleeves are the catch. The Knot's answer works here: "Even for an indoor event, packing a plush shawl, faux-fur wrap or dress coat ensures you stay warm from arrival to send-off." Not a white one, for reasons further down.
The dark green velvet suit is the look I liked most on this page. The Knot names "velvet suits" in its November line, and this one has satin peak lapels, gold buttons and flared trousers that cover most of the shoe. With burgundy satin heels it uses two November colours at once. It is also the warmest outfit here that is not a coat. The try-on kept the velvet's sheen this time; in our October guide it drew velvet as flat crepe, so check the shop photo before you trust any render, ours included.
The coat is part of the outfit
Green Wedding Shoes says it in one sentence: "November means darker jewel tones like this drop-waist style, closed toes, and a coat you actually want to be seen in." Charles & Keith goes further: "Most November weddings are indoor affairs, as the weather is generally too cold to stay outside for long," and "a warm coat is a non-negotiable at this time of the year." Even indoors, David's Bridal warns, you may not stay in: "Bring an option even if the ceremony is indoors; the reception often moves outside briefly for photos or drinks."

- Zapaka Brown Notched Lapel Long Teddy Wool coat $89 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link

So I tried one look with the coat on. The dress is a black mesh midi with large red and pink flowers, which is exactly what Adrianna Papell means by "bold, botanical prints set against dark, moody backgrounds." It is sleeveless, so on its own it falls under Azazie's condition: fine if the venue is fully indoors and well heated. The coat is a long brown teddy coat at $89, and on the render it reads as part of the look rather than something to hand to the coat check. One thing What Is She Wearing would point out: "Long coats that cover or match the hem of a shorter dress or skirt are a style detail that elevates your look as well." Here the dress falls a few inches below the coat, which I find fine with a print this dark and less fine with a light dress. Azazie's rule for the evening: "Remove your outer layer for indoor photos and dancing."
Formal and black tie in November
The Knot's guide for a formal or black-tie fall wedding: "Choose floor-length gowns in heavy silk, satin or velvet and jewel tones like plum, emerald green, navy or burgundy." Adrianna Papell's version adds the coat: "Formal November weddings call for floor-length gowns, elegant satin dresses, velvet gowns, or sophisticated one-shoulder silhouettes. Complete the look with classic heels, refined jewelry, and a tailored evening coat for outdoor moments." The Knot calls velvet "ideal for late-season formal events." The code is not rare: on The Knot's guest-cost page, "19% of weddings require formal or black-tie attire."

- Zapaka Dark Red Sweetheart A Line Long Velvet Dress with Long Sleeves $159 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
- Zapaka Black Leather Pointy Heels $54 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
The dark red velvet gown is the most expensive piece here, at $159, and the one that looks most like November. It has a sweetheart bodice, long sleeves that sit off the shoulder, and a train that pools on the floor behind the size 12 mannequin. The velvet kept its depth on the render. The train is the only thing I would think twice about. It looks right in a photo and it will be stepped on at the dance, so plan to hold it or pin it up once the dancing starts.
November wedding attire for men

The Knot's guide for men starts with the fabric: "Seersucker and summer cottons are replaced with wool, flannel and tweed suiting." It also says "Three-piece suits and double-breasted suits (which offer a bit more warmth) come into play too as the weather cools down." The Tie Bar agrees: "A three-piece flannel suit is an excellent choice for a formal or semi-formal October or November wedding." The Black Tux puts it more simply: "Nothing says "fall" quite like the textural interest of tweed and herringbone patterns."
Zapaka sells the suit above as dark grey. The try-on made it a mid grey with a fleck that reads as tweed, which is the right texture for the month, and kept the waistcoat. The shop photo comes with a black bow tie and the render copied it. A bow tie reads as black tie to me; for a cocktail or semi-formal November wedding I would swap it for a long tie in burgundy or brown. The brown brogues follow Jos. A. Bank's rule: "Brown leather shoes are the default for a fall wedding, with black kept for formal evening events." The same page on black suits: "Save black for black-tie-optional events; on its own it can look severe next to autumn surroundings." On top, for an outdoor ceremony, "a navy or charcoal topcoat over the suit is the cleaner answer than a bulky overcoat." The Knot also suggests "swapping your classic blue or black suit with an option in burgundy, brown or olive green." Our catalogue has no men's suit in those colours that I would put in front of a wedding guest today.
What I wouldn't wear

- Zapaka ZAPAKA White Faux Fur Wrap $60 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
- Zapaka Leather Black Chunky Heels $48 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
The wrap is the right idea. Describing a winter mountain wedding with an outdoor ceremony, The Knot's dress-code guide says "it's likely that a chic faux fur wrap or wool coat will very much be the vibe (and keep you warm)." The colour is the problem. The Knot also quotes Ranu Coleman of Azazie: "it's important not to wear any shade of white to a wedding unless it's specifically stated in the invitation," and Zola's guest guide rules out "white, cream, ivory, or any other shades of white". The Knot does allow a dress "with a hint of white as long as it's not the main color." On the render, from the waist up, white is the main colour, and in a photo taken at the table it is the first thing you see. The same wrap in black, brown or burgundy would be fine; this one I would leave in the shop.
The other misses are simpler. Spaghetti straps with no layer, which David's Bridal names first among its fall mistakes. Pastels and very bright colours, which Azazie says "feel seasonally out of place in late autumn." Thin stilettos at an outdoor ceremony, for The Knot's reason above. And boots at a black-tie wedding.
Questions people ask
What should I wear to a November wedding as a guest?
A midi or longer dress with long sleeves, in a fabric with weight (velvet, satin, wool blend, jacquard) and a deep colour, with closed shoes and a coat. At a formal or black-tie wedding, a floor-length gown. A velvet suit works too; The Knot lists velvet suits among November options.
Is it too cold for a sleeveless dress in November?
Not if the whole wedding is indoors. Azazie says a sleeveless gown "can work in November if the venue is fully indoors and well-heated." Bring a coat or a wrap anyway: David's Bridal notes that receptions often move outside briefly for photos or drinks.
Can I wear black to a November wedding?
Usually, yes, especially in the evening. Azazie calls black "always appropriate at formal events," and David's Bridal says a black cocktail dress "can look elegant at a fall wedding." Avoid it at a traditional church ceremony, at some cultural and religious weddings, and at a casual daytime one.
Can I wear boots to a November wedding?
At a casual or semi-formal wedding, sleek ankle boots under a midi are fine; Adrianna Papell and The Knot both allow them. WeddingWire says boots "should be reserved for informal dress codes," so skip them at formal and black-tie weddings.
Do I need tights at a November wedding?
It depends on the dress code and the walk from the car. What Is She Wearing recommends sheer black tights on cold evenings rather than bare legs; Adrianna Papell says to wear tights "only when appropriate for the dress code and venue." With a long dress or trousers, the question goes away.
What colours are best for a November wedding?
Plum, burgundy, oxblood, emerald and forest green, chocolate brown, navy and charcoal, plus burnished gold. Avoid white, ivory and cream, and leave pastels for spring.
What should men wear to a November wedding?
A wool, flannel or tweed suit, three pieces if you have them, in navy, charcoal, grey or a warm earth tone. Brown leather shoes by day, black at a formal evening wedding, and a navy or charcoal topcoat for an outdoor ceremony.
Should a November wedding guest dress be floor length?
Only at a formal or black-tie wedding. Azazie calls a floor-length gown the most seasonal choice; The Knot keeps it for formal and black tie. At a cocktail or semi-formal wedding, a midi with long sleeves is the safer length.
