First date outfit ideas: what to wear by venue, on 7 real looks
Dinner, drinks, coffee or a cold walk: what to wear on a first date, where the guides disagree, and 7 real outfits on our mannequins.
Wear It On Me earns a commission on garments bought through affiliate links in our guides. That never decides what we recommend. Details.
What should you wear on a first date? One notch above what you wear on an ordinary day, picked for where you are going, and comfortable enough that you forget about it once you sit down. The designer Christopher John Rogers put it to the New York Times as "what you wear every day, but amped up a bit," and the same piece names what goes wrong most often: "shoes that hobble you or clothing that is too tight to eat." The outfit's job is to stay out of the way. In Match's Singles in America study, run this spring with the Kinsey Institute, 49 percent of singles said they have fallen for someone they did not initially find attractive, and great conversation was the leading reason.
The busy season for this question is ahead. Hinge calls the first Sunday in January "Dating Sunday", "annually recognized as the busiest day for dating apps," and CBS News reported from Hinge's data that in the two weeks before Valentine's Day 2024, matches and dates both rose 17 percent on the year before. Most of the guides that rank for this search are shopping lists, and the winter ones treat the coat as one more thing to buy rather than the thing that comes off at the table. So I put seven outfits on our mannequins with the same try-on you can use on your own photo, sorted by where the date happens: dinner, drinks, coffee, a cold evening, straight from work, one for him, and one I would leave at home. The pieces come from Zapaka, the shop our catalogue carries today. Under every render: the pieces, their price when we last checked, a link to try them on yourself, and a marked link to the shop.

Dress for the plan, not for the person
Nearly every guide I read starts in the same place. The Knot: "That's why it's so important to take the date's venue into account when planning your outfit." Glamour's Malia Griggs: "what you'd wear on a coffee date is very different from what you'd slip on for dinner and dancing." Cosmopolitan: "A cozy dinner and drinks calls for something totally different than an afternoon of ice skating and sipping hot chocolate." Bumble's own blog, writing on October 14, tells you to "consider the actual plan, too," and adds, with four exclamation marks, "especially when choosing shoes!!!!"
The plans are often small ones. Tinder's Year in Swipe for 2025 puts a walk or a coffee at the top of its first-date list, as something "playful and low-pressure." CNBC, reporting a DatingNews.com and Kinsey Institute study in November 2025, found that "35% of Americans are choosing to get coffee or drinks on a date, as opposed to getting a full meal." And the drinks are optional: Hinge's 2025 Gen Z report found that "Only 21% of younger Gen Z daters prefer to drink on a first date."
So the looks below go from the dressiest plan to the most casual. The one sentence I would keep from all of them is Men's Wearhouse's, and it works for everyone: "Your outfit shouldn't be the topic of conversation, but it should be clear that you put thought into it."
Where the guides disagree
| Question | One side | The other side |
|---|---|---|
| Heels or flats? | Who What Wear's Sierra Mayhew: "high heels are a must no matter how tall he is." eharmony, for an evening date: "a blazer, heels and slightly bolder makeup" | Glamour: "flats you can actually walk in." Bumble: "i love a tiny heel, but i'd choose a pair i know i can move in." |
| Red? | Southern Tide: "the best colors to wear on a first date are red and black." wikiHow: "scientifically proven to catch your date's attention" | A meta-analysis reported by Psychology Today: the effect "could be very small and even potentially nonexistent." Men's Wearhouse: "Neutrals, darker tones, and subtle textures are easier to style" |
| How dressy? | The Knot: "there's no such thing as being overdressed, especially on a first date" | Adrianna Papell, on its list of mistakes: "Overdress for the setting." Vogue's Christian Allaire: "I tend to pull back on a first date" |
| A suit? | The Knot: "a stylish dress or suit is guaranteed to make a good impression" | Men's Wearhouse: "a full suit is too much." Bumble's coffee guide would leave your "power suit hanging in your closet" |
| Dress or jeans? | eharmony, for the evening: "Stick with a dress" | Vogue: "jeans and a tee can look just as refined as a full-on cocktail gown." Byrdie: "denim is definitely first-date approved." |
| Something new? | Vogue, in 2021: "feel empowered to procure either a new dress or the perfect accessory" | Bumble: "very much in favor of repeating an outfit for a date." The Cut, on new pieces: "proceed with caution" |
| Trendy or classic? | Byrdie: "If trends are the way to your heart, channel that energy with a statement top" | eharmony: "a classic outfit is key." Southern Tide: overly trendy clothing "can make you appear materialistic and unapproachable" |
Most of these are less opposed than they look, because each side is picturing a different date. Heels and a dress are the evening answer, flats and jeans the daytime one. Where they really disagree is overdressing. I side with The Knot at dinner and with Adrianna Papell everywhere else: at a restaurant, too dressed is the smaller mistake; at a coffee shop at 11 a.m., it is the bigger one.
Dinner: a dress you can sit in
The slate blue dress at the top is the one I would wear to a first dinner. It is burnout velvet, with a halter neck, a wrap front and a tie at the waist, and on our size 8 mannequin the draped hem stops at the knee. Zapaka's title calls it a midi and its shop address calls it a knee-length homecoming dress. The knee is where it landed in the render, so check the size chart if you want it longer. The Knot makes the case for the fabric: "Velvets and jewel tones, for instance, offer a sultry vibe that's perfect for a fall or winter date."
The neckline matters more than the hem. Sierra Mayhew, one of the single women Who What Wear asked, reminds her friends that "their date is only going to see them from the waist up for the majority of the time," and Glamour adds the warning: "Nothing's worse than worrying about an overly revealing neckline or an itchy zipper midway through dinner." A halter that stays put is what you are buying here, so test it the way Bumble suggests: "sit down in the outfit before you leave.... very revealing exercise."
For the shoes, The Knot again: "Dining at an upscale restaurant? Go ahead and get dressed up, but be sure to choose a pair of shoes you can walk in if dinner turns into a late-night stroll." These are black satin pumps with a block heel, an ankle strap and a jewelled bow, $69 when we last checked, with the dress at $109. The strap and the block heel are what make the stroll possible. In winter the bare shoulders need a coat, which is what the cold-evening look below is about; our guide to winter wedding guest dresses has more ways to cover a dress without sleeves.
Drinks: shorter and darker, not tighter

- Zapaka Khaki Bodycon Halter Burnout Velvet Short Cocktail Dress $109 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
- Zapaka Black Leather Pointy Heels $54 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
For drinks I would go shorter and darker. This is the same idea as a mini: burnout velvet, a halter that crosses at the throat and leaves the shoulders bare, and a wrapped skirt above the knee. Zapaka calls it khaki. In its photo and on our size 12 mannequin it is a dusty copper brown. It cost $109 when we last checked, and the black T-strap heels $54.
The bar decides how far to go. The Knot's formula: "Jeans + a cute top = a foolproof look for a bar or brewery setting. We recommend sticking to darker colors like black, navy blue and red." Cosmopolitan puts the limit plainly: "Going to a sports bar in a teeny dress isn't always the move." So this dress is for a cocktail bar or a wine bar with real chairs, not a brewery. It sits at about the level a wedding invitation would call cocktail attire (our guide to cocktail dress attire for wedding guests explains that code), and for a first drink I would not go past it.
Short is fine; tight is the risk. Katie Lloyd, a matchmaker, told The Cut: "If you're fidgeting because your dress is too tight or too short, or your heels are too high, it's going to convey a message to the person across from you." Try the bar stool test at home before you go. And a drinks date may not involve drinks: in a DatingNews.com survey of 1,007 American millennials and Gen Zers in April 2024, 65 percent said they would prefer a dry date. A mocktail bar asks for the same outfit.
Coffee or a walk: the most ordinary outfit of the seven

- Zapaka Hepburn Style Polka Dots Vintage Dress with Short Sleeves $49 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
- Zapaka Red Straps Retro Heels $54 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
Bumble's coffee-date guide sets the level: "coffee dates are casual, so you can leave your LBD or power suit hanging in your closet, unless of course you're meeting for a date in the midst of your working day… Or you want to wear them." It also points out that "most coffee shops don't stay open past 6 or 7pm," so this is a daylight outfit, and daylight is less forgiving of anything shiny.
The light blue shirt dress is a 1950s cut, with white dots, a white collar and cuffs and a full skirt, $49 when we last checked. On our size 8 mannequin the hem sits at the knee; in Zapaka's photo it falls a little lower. With it, red patent Mary Janes with two straps and a low block heel ($54). Glamour suggests "snappy red kitten heels for height and a pop of color" for a date straight from the office, and a red shoe does the same job under a blue dress.
The guides would rather you wore flats to this one. Glamour: "flats you can actually walk in." The Cut: "Meeting at the museum? Wear the ballet flats that you can walk 10,000-plus steps in." eharmony: "stick with flats rather than heels in case you two decide to take a romantic walk." Every women's shoe Zapaka has in our catalogue today has some heel, so this low Mary Jane is the flattest pair I could put on the mannequin. For a long walk, two guides give the easier answer: Rogers' "a dress with sneakers" in the Times, and Danielle Goldmark in Who What Wear: "I usually go for a midi dress with sneakers. Comfy, cool, and cute."
Jeans are the other answer, and Vogue's 2025 guide backs them: "jeans and a tee can look just as refined as a full-on cocktail gown." Our catalogue carries no jeans today, which is why no render here shows a pair. If yours are wide, our guide on what shoes to wear with wide leg jeans tried nine pairs with them.
A cold evening: plan for the coat coming off

The winter guides list a coat, boots and a knit, and stop there. What they skip is that your date sees two outfits: the one that arrives, and the one sitting across the table once the coat is on the back of the chair. Byrdie comes closest to saying it: "Sometimes you find yourself spending time outdoors during a cold-weather date, whether you're walking from dinner to a cocktail bar, enjoying a near-empty park, or checking out holiday lights."
This look is built for both halves. Outside, a short faux fur jacket to the hip, $79 when we last checked. Zapaka calls it khaki; it reads taupe in its photo and in the render. Marie Claire's case for it: "A great statement coat is important in the winter date night outfit equation, and some materials will make a greater impression than others." Inside, a black A-line 1950s dress with a high neck, a sheer dotted yoke, short sheer sleeves and a ribbon tie ($42). When the jacket comes off, what is left is a black dress with a high neck, which is still an outfit for a restaurant. On our size 12 mannequin it falls just below the knee.
Add tights. wikiHow's advice for a cold night is "a simple pair of black tights and a scarf," and The Everygirl's winter list starts with "fitted long sleeves, sheer tights, knee-high boots, and intentional layers." Boots are what most of these guides put under a dress; Marie Claire: "Leather knee-high boots juxtapose nicely against the knit, while also providing coverage and warmth." Our catalogue has no dressy women's boot in stock today, so the render shows black patent Mary Janes with white trim and a chunky heel ($59). On a wet pavement I would rather walk in that heel than in a stiletto. And do what The Knot says before you leave: "check the forecast beforehand and pack a coat if necessary."
Straight from work: a suit, and the red question

- Zapaka Red 2-Piece Notched Lapel Women Prom Suits With Pockets $129 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
- Zapaka Black Leather Pointy Heels $54 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
A suit is the outfit for a date that starts when the office closes, and the guides split on it. The Knot: "We believe that there's no such thing as being overdressed, especially on a first date, and a stylish dress or suit is guaranteed to make a good impression." Bumble's coffee guide would leave the power suit at home, unless the date falls "in the midst of your working day." My reading: after work, at dinner, yes. On a Saturday morning, no.
This one is red, with a one-button blazer, flap pockets and flared trousers, $129 when we last checked. Zapaka files it under prom suits, but it is a matte red with no shine, and in the render it reads as a work suit. Two notes from our size 8 mannequin. The blazer closes on its single button over nothing, so plan a camisole or a fine knit under it. And the trousers stop at the ankle, shorter than in the shop photo, where they flare to the floor. The black T-strap heels are the same $54 pair as under the drinks dress.
Then there is the colour. Southern Tide says "According to color psychologists, the best colors to wear on a first date are red and black," and wikiHow calls them "scientifically proven." The study behind the claim is real: in 2008, as PsyPost reported, "men found the woman in the red shirt more physically and sexually attractive" and said they were more willing to ask her out. It has not held up well. The authors of a later meta-analysis, as Psychology Today reported in 2019, concluded that the true effect of red on attraction "could be very small and even potentially nonexistent in real-world circumstances." Wear red because you like it in red. Katie Lloyd, in The Cut, says the same thing more politely: "Sure, there is something to that psychologically, but I would never blanket tell someone what to wear."
For him: a blazer, not a suit

- Zapaka Coffee Notched Lapel Single Breasted Men's Blazer Jacket $75 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
- Zapaka Brown Lace-Up Leather Men's Shoes $89 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
The men's guides agree with each other more than the women's do: dress up a little, and stop short of a suit. Men's Wearhouse: "A first date is a good time to dress up a little more than you would on an average day," but "Dinner calls for a more elevated look, but a full suit is too much." The Essential Man's survey of 101 women, from 2017, reached the same line: "Suits on first dates is a little too much." In that survey, "60.2% of the women surveyed loved to see their date show up in a button-up collared shirt."
The blazer is a brown and grey plaid, single-breasted, $75 when we last checked, with brown leather wingtips at $89. Zapaka sells the blazer alone; the try-on dressed the rest, with plain grey trousers, a white shirt and a dark tie, and it added the tie on both renders I ran. I would take it off. For January, Men's Wearhouse has a better idea than the tie: "You can also wear a sweater as a base layer before adding a blazer or sport coat for cooler climates." The plaid is busier than its advice that "Neutrals, darker tones, and subtle textures are easier to style than bold prints or bright colors," so keep everything else plain. If you like the jacket, our guide to men's fall wedding attire puts a tweed one to work at a wedding.
What I wouldn't wear

- Zapaka A-Line Champagne V-Neck Ruched Floral Midi Dress with Cap Sleeves $115 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
- Zapaka Creamy Ankle Straps Heels $54 Try it on Shop at Zapakaaffiliate link
The champagne midi is a lovely dress for the wrong afternoon. It is a structured floral jacquard with a V-neck and cap sleeves, $115 with the cream Mary Janes at $54, and on our size 12 mannequin it looks like a dress for an engagement party, not a lunch with someone you met on an app. Two things count against it. It is pale enough to read as white, and Southern Tide reports a study in which participants ranked yellow "on the less attractive side of the scale" and "white wasn't much better." And it is dressier than a daytime date asks for. Adrianna Papell's list of mistakes starts there: "Overdress for the setting: Wearing stilettos to a picnic might not make sense. Match your vibe to the venue." Who What Wear's winter guide disagrees about white ("White pants and a sleek blouse make for a great first-date look"), and it is right that the colour alone is not the problem. The combination is.
Three more things stay home. Shoes you have not broken in; Byrdie: "A first date is probably not the best time to wear the new shoes you still need to break in or the pants that feel restrictive once you've had a nice meal." Sweatpants, unless the plan is a walk: one of Katie Lloyd's clients read a date's sweatpants as "an indication of not caring and being unable to plan and prioritize," although Cosmopolitan dresses a winter walk in a "boyfriend hoodie and fleece sweatpants." And for men, shorts. eharmony: "there is no first date casual enough for bare knees on men."
Questions people ask
What should I wear on a first date?
Something one notch above an ordinary day, chosen for the venue: a dress or a good top for dinner, something darker for drinks, jeans or a casual dress with shoes you can walk in for coffee or a walk. Christopher John Rogers' version, in the New York Times: "what you wear every day, but amped up a bit."
What should I wear on a first date in winter?
Two outfits in one: a coat you are happy to arrive in, and something underneath that still looks dressed when the coat comes off. Add tights, and wear boots or a chunky heel if the pavement is wet. The Knot's advice is to "check the forecast beforehand and pack a coat if necessary."
Is it better to be overdressed or underdressed on a first date?
The guides split. The Knot says "there's no such thing as being overdressed, especially on a first date," while Adrianna Papell lists overdressing for the setting as a mistake. At dinner, overdressing costs you less than it does at a coffee shop.
Should I wear heels on a first date?
Only a pair you can walk in. Glamour and eharmony prefer flats for daytime and walking dates, and for dinner a block heel with a strap is the middle ground. Bumble: "i love a tiny heel, but i'd choose a pair i know i can move in."
Is red a good color for a first date?
It is a fine colour, not a secret weapon. The 2008 study behind the advice found men rated a woman in a red shirt as more attractive, but a later meta-analysis reported by Psychology Today concluded the real-world effect "could be very small and even potentially nonexistent."
Can I wear jeans on a first date?
Yes, for coffee, drinks or a casual dinner. Byrdie: "denim is definitely first-date approved." Men's Wearhouse says to "choose a pair that fits well, and skip heavy rips or distressed details."
Should I buy a new outfit for a first date?
Plenty of people do: in a UK survey for TK Maxx published in October 2024, 52 percent said they buy a new outfit for a first date. If you do, test it first. The Cut warns that "you might not realize a top slides down or a new pair of shoes gives you blisters until it's too late."
What should a man wear on a first date?
A blazer over a collared shirt or a fine sweater, with good trousers or dark jeans. Men's Wearhouse says that for dinner "a full suit is too much," and eharmony rules out shorts: "there is no first date casual enough for bare knees on men."
