Key takeaways

- Read the dress code first. The Knot calls it "the most important factor", and it is on the invitation or the couple's wedding website.
- No dress code? The time and the venue decide. After 6 pm, Emily Post says to "err on the side of formality". If you know the couple, ask.
- Semi-formal is the code you will see most: The Knot puts it at 60 percent of couples. A dressy midi, a dressy jumpsuit or a suit covers it.
- Skip white. In Zola's survey of more than 11,500 couples it drew 96 percent disapproval. Red was fine for 69 percent.

What to wear to a wedding as a guest is decided by one line on the invitation, the dress code. The Knot calls it "the most important factor to take into consideration when deciding what to wear at a wedding", and you will find it on the invitation or on the couple's wedding website. When there is none, Emily Post's rule does the job: "The wedding invitation and the time of the wedding will be your best guide to its formality." An evening reception in a hotel asks for more than a lunch in a garden, and anything close to white is wrong at both. After that, the season picks the fabric and the sleeves, and the venue picks the shoes.

It sounds simple, and plenty of guests still find it hard. ThredUp surveyed 1,443 American adults who had been to a wedding in the previous 18 months: nearly one in three lacked the confidence to read modern dress codes, and 62 percent spent three hours or more on a single outfit. This page sorts every guide we have written for wedding guests the way a guest decides: dress code, then date, then who is getting dressed. The three looks on it are borrowed from those guides.

The navy jumpsuit, from the semi-formal guide, settles whether trousers are dressy enough for a wedding (at semi-formal, yes). The green velvet midi, from the October guide, is what a fall evening asks for: long sleeves and a fabric with some weight.

## Start with the invitation

The code is on the invitation or, failing that, on the wedding website. When neither says anything, Brides suggests reading "context clues, such as the tone of the wedding invitation, the venue, the time of day, the season, and the religion (if applicable) of the ceremony." Emily Post adds a rule for the clock: "if the event is later than 6 in the evening, you'll want to err on the side of formality."

If you know the couple, ask. Vogue says that when you are close to them "it is fine to shoot a quick text". For a religious service, Emily Post raises one more question: "Would bare shoulders and arms or open-toed shoes be offensive?"

## By dress code

From the most formal down; three codes have a full guide here.

Black tie means a tuxedo for men and, for women, "Formal gowns that graze the ground or the top of the shoes" (The Knot). Black tie optional relaxes both: "Floor-length evening gowns welcome, as are elevated midi dresses," and The Black Tux says a dark suit and tie "would be fine" in a pinch. An invitation that just says formal sits about here, with "sleek jumpsuits" allowed.

Sparkle belongs to these evening codes and to cocktail. Our guide to [sequin dresses for wedding guests](/blog/sequin-wedding-guest-dresses/) says how much shine each code can take, and gives the one test to run before you buy a pale sequin dress.

Cocktail means "a tea-length, knee-length, or midi look", in Brides' words, and a suit. Our guide to [cocktail dress attire for wedding](/blog/cocktail-attire-for-a-wedding/) guests sorts it by the hour and the season on eight looks, and lists six points where the guides disagree, ties and black included.

Semi-formal is "the most popular dress code for a wedding", according to The Knot. Our guide to [semi formal attire for a wedding](/blog/semi-formal-wedding-attire/) gives the hemline, the fabrics and the clock rule on eight outfits, the navy jumpsuit among them.

Dressy casual has no guide here yet. The Knot calls it "most closely related to semi-formal attire", so read the semi-formal guide.

Casual still means a wedding: "a wedding is still a formal event, after all, so there are some rules to keep in mind," says The Knot. Our guide to [casual dresses for wedding](/blog/casual-wedding-attire/) guests lists those rules on seven looks, with both sides of the jeans question.

## When the guides disagree

The names of the codes are less settled than they look.

| Question | One answer | The other answer |
|---|---|---|
| Is cocktail the same as semi-formal? | Yes. Zola calls semi-formal "also commonly referred to as cocktail attire" | No. Brides puts cocktail "a small step above semi-formal" |
| Is formal the same as black tie optional? | Yes, "essentially the same thing as black-tie optional" (Vogue) | No. The Knot lists them as two separate codes |
| A shorter dress at black tie? | No. Vogue asks for floor length: "no midi dresses" | Emily Post's black tie list includes your dressiest "little black dress" |
| A tuxedo at black tie? | "Only one correct outfit for guys: a black tuxedo" (a style expert in The Knot) | "For black-tie and formal events, a suit and tie is the standard" (The Knot's menswear guide) |

When two good sources split, I take the stricter answer in the evening and the looser one by day.

## By season or month

### Fall

Our guide to [fall wedding guest dresses](/blog/fall-wedding-guest-dresses/) is the long one: fourteen looks on two body types, by dress code and by month, barns and boots included. Start there if all you know is the season.

The [October wedding guest dress](/blog/october-wedding-guest-dresses/) guide goes weekend by weekend, because the first Saturday of the month and the last are two different climates. A [November wedding guest dress](/blog/november-wedding-guest-dresses/) has to survive a reception that feels like winter, and that guide dresses for the evening, coat included. Both have seven looks.

Already settled on the colour? [Burgundy fall wedding guest dresses](/blog/burgundy-wedding-guest-dresses/) covers it at every code, with the check to make first: what the bridesmaids are wearing.

### Winter

Our guide to [winter wedding guest dresses](/blog/winter-wedding-guest-dresses/) has fourteen looks and one firm rule: buy the coat before the dress, since it is in every photo taken outside. Before the wedding there is often a shower, and the [bridal shower outfit winter](/blog/winter-bridal-shower-outfits/) calls for is a daytime one, never white for a guest, shown on seven looks.

### Spring and summer

We have not written these yet. Zola's short version: for spring, "pastels (light pinks, blues, greens)"; for summer, "breezy fabrics and forgiving shapes to keep you comfortable through all of the heat."

## By who is wearing it

### Men

*[Render: AI try-on render of the Zapaka dark grey three-piece suit with brown cap-toe monk-strap shoes on our men's mannequin]*

- Zapaka, Dark Grey Notched Lapel Single Breasted 3-Piece Men's Wedding Suits, $119. Try it on: https://wearitonme.com/product/zapaka%3A14935099965803. - Zapaka, Brown Slip-On Leather Men's Party Shoes, $89. Try it on: https://wearitonme.com/product/zapaka%3A14838888923499. Shop (affiliate link): https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?awinmid=91139&awinaffid=2963863&ued=https%3A%2F%2Fzapaka.com%2Fproducts%2Fbrown-slip-on-leather-mens-party-shoes
The Knot's menswear advice for any doubt is "a classic blue or black suit." With no code at all, The Black Tux recommends "wearing a dark suit and keeping it simple." The charcoal three-piece above comes from our guide to [men's fall wedding attire](/blog/mens-fall-wedding-attire/), which sorts suits, cloths and shoes by dress code on seven looks. For the shoes alone, [what color shoes with navy suit](/blog/what-color-shoes-with-a-navy-suit/) answers with one suit in three pairs.

### Over 50

The Knot's answer is the right one: wedding clothes for older women "are whatever you want them to be." Our guide to [fall wedding guest dresses for over 50](/blog/wedding-guest-dresses-over-50/) adds what helps on a long day, from the hem to the heel, trousers included. It also shows how to wear a mother-of-the-bride dress as a guest, since that is how most dresses with sleeves are sold.

## What I wouldn't wear

White, ivory or cream, at any code. Zola calls white "the ultimate no-no (96% disapproval)". The Knot allows a white shirt under a suit, or a dress "with a hint of white as long as it's not the main color."

A stiletto on a lawn. The Knot recommends "a chunky heel for walking purposes", because a thin heel risks "sinking into the grass or sand."

A new outfit when one I own already fits the code. ThredUp found the average guest spends $550 to $820 or more on outfits worn once, and only 36 percent resell them.

## Questions people ask

### What should I wear to a wedding with no dress code?

Look at the time and the venue, and dress a step up after 6 pm. Brides' fallback: "When in doubt, a knee-length cocktail dress for a woman and a dark suit for a man will usually suffice."

### What is the most common wedding dress code?

Semi-formal. The Knot says 60 percent of couples favor it, and 19 percent of weddings require formal or black tie attire. A planner quoted by Brides says formal, so trust your own invitation.

### Can I wear black to a wedding?

Usually, yes. Emily Post's black tie list includes your dressiest "little black dress", and The Knot's default for men is a blue or black suit. Our dress code guides cover the daytime exceptions.

### Can I wear red to a wedding?

Yes, for most couples. In Zola's survey, 69 percent said red is acceptable for guests, and Zola calls the old myth "largely gone."

### Can I wear a jumpsuit to a wedding?

Yes. The Knot allows "sleek jumpsuits" even at a formal wedding. Choose a fabric with some finish and a dressy shoe.

### Is it rude to ask the couple about the dress code?

No. The Knot says you can "reach out to the couple for their attire expectations", and Vogue calls a quick text fine if you are close to them. Ask early.
