Key takeaways

- Most fall weddings ask a man for a suit and a tie. The Tie Bar: "Cocktail attire is the most common fall wedding dress code." A tuxedo only when the invitation says black tie.
- The fall colours are brown, olive and deep green, on top of the usual navy and charcoal, with burgundy or rust in the tie. One accent is enough.
- The fall cloths are wool, flannel, tweed and corduroy, and velvet in the evening. Linen and seersucker stay in the closet until spring.
- Brown leather shoes by day, black at a formal evening. Boots work at semi-formal, rustic and casual weddings, never at black tie.
- Dress for the end of the night: the last dance can be 20 or 25 degrees colder than the vows. Bring a wool overcoat, not a puffer.
- The guides split on tweed at a cocktail wedding, on black suits, on coloured tuxedos and on whether black tie optional means a tuxedo. The table below has both sides.

What should a man wear to a fall wedding? In most cases a suit, in a colour that belongs to the season and a cloth with some weight, with a tie and brown leather shoes. The Knot sums up the change in one line: "Seersucker and summer cottons are replaced with wool, flannel and tweed suiting." The suit is the default because the dress code usually asks for one. Jos. A. Bank: "Most autumn weddings land at semi-formal or cocktail." Only a black-tie invitation calls for a tuxedo, and only a casual one lets you leave the jacket at home. Even then, I would bring it.

Fall is when most of these invitations arrive. According to The Knot, "35% of couples get married from September through November," and October ties June as the busiest month, at 16 percent of weddings each. The same publisher says "fall has been the most popular season to marry since 2015" and that "2025 was an especially fall-wedding-heavy year." On dress codes, its guest-cost page finds semi-formal "favored by 60% of couples," while "19% of weddings require formal or black-tie attire." Guests find all this harder than couples think. A ThredUp survey published in May 2026 found that "58% of Guests Say Dress Codes Are More Specific Than Ever; Nearly 1 in 3 Are Unsure What to Wear." This page is the men's side of our fall guides. For the dresses, see [fall wedding guest dresses](/blog/fall-wedding-guest-dresses/); for the codes themselves, our guides to [semi formal attire for a wedding](/blog/semi-formal-wedding-attire/) and [cocktail dress attire for wedding](/blog/cocktail-attire-for-a-wedding/) guests.

Every look below is something you can buy. The suits, the jackets, the waistcoat and the shoes come from Zapaka, the shop our catalogue carries today, and each look was put on our men's mannequin by the same try-on you can use on your own photo. Under every render: the pieces, their price when we last checked, a link to try them on yourself, and a marked link to the shop. One thing up front, because every guide I quote keeps saying wool: Zapaka lists the fabric of every suit, jacket and waistcoat on this page as polyester. The renders show the colour, the cut and how the pieces work together. They cannot tell you how warm a cloth is, so read the advice on cloth as advice for your own wardrobe, and plan a coat. The ties, pins and pocket squares on the renders come from the shop photos; Zapaka's listings include only the jacket, the trousers and, for the three-pieces, the waistcoat.

## What changes for men in the fall

The colours, the cloth and the layers change. The dress codes do not. Real Men Real Style, whose fall guide went up on October 9, puts it plainly: "Fall changes the fabric and the color. It doesn't change what 'black tie' or 'cocktail' means."

On colour, The Knot suggests "swapping your classic blue or black suit with an option in burgundy, brown or olive green," and names "the season's signature colors (deep green, orange, burgundy, or purple)." Jos. A. Bank: "Brown is the signature fall color and reads warm without being loud." Navy and charcoal remain the safe base, especially early in the season. The Tie Bar: "Navy or mid-gray suits are the safest choices for a September wedding."

On cloth, this is the season for wool, flannel and tweed, and for the suits that add a layer. The Knot: "Three-piece suits and double-breasted suits (which offer a bit more warmth) come into play too as the weather cools down."

On layers, dress for the temperature at the end of the night. Jos. A. Bank warns that "a September evening outdoors can be twenty degrees cooler than the ceremony," and Real Men Real Style that "A 25-degree drop between the ceremony and the last dance is normal in October."

The suit at the top of this page is a double-breasted two-piece with peak lapels and six buttons, at $139. Zapaka calls the colour khaki; in its photo and on the render it is a mid brown, closer to tobacco than to chinos. It is the fall suit most of these guides describe. Real Men Real Style: "A dark brown suit with a light blue shirt is one of my favorite fall wedding looks." This one is a shade lighter than dark brown, and I would wear it to a cocktail or semi-formal wedding from late September on, with a light blue shirt and a burgundy or green tie. Not to a black-tie-optional evening, though. The same guide says of brown: "Skip it for black tie optional, where darker and more formal is the move." The cap-toe monk straps ($89) are the same warm brown as the suit. Zapaka files them as slip-ons, which is what a buckled monk strap is.

## Fall wedding attire for men by dress code

The invitation decides, and the season adjusts. If the invitation is vague, The Knot's advice is to look for the code on the couple's site: it can "typically be found on the couple's wedding website."

Black tie means a tuxedo. The Tie Bar: "Traditional black tie requires either a black or midnight blue tux." With it, black patent or highly polished black oxfords. Real Men Real Style adds "No boots." Fall adds one option, which it describes as "a velvet dinner jacket in deep green, burgundy, or midnight blue, worn with black tuxedo trousers." The timing matters: "Velvet is a cold-weather fabric, so save it for evening receptions from late October on."

Black tie optional is where the guides split, and the table further down has both sides. The Knot says it requires a tuxedo; Real Men Real Style says that without one, your darkest suit will do.

The navy suit ($109) is as close as this catalogue gets to a midnight blue dinner suit: black satin peak lapels, one button, and a black bow tie from the shop photo. Zapaka sells it as a suit, not a tuxedo, and the trousers have no satin stripe, in the shop photo or on the render. For black tie optional I would wear it with one change. The black slip-ons under it ($89) have a white sole, and Zapaka sells them as casual shoes. John White, a British shoemaker, is firm on this point: "Avoid loafers for black tie or morning dress." With this suit I would wear black oxfords.

The velvet suit ($99) is black and double-breasted, with piping along the lapels, the pocket flaps and the cuffs. On the render the buttons came out a brighter gold than in Zapaka's photo, and the piping down the side of the trousers disappeared. A whole velvet suit is more than the guides ask for; they mean a velvet jacket over plain trousers. I would keep it for a November evening, with a white shirt and a bow tie, because The Tie Bar advises against "all-black attire" and a black shirt under black velvet is exactly that. The same white-soled slip-ons are under it here. For a party they pass; for anything called black tie they do not.

Cocktail and formal mean a suit and a tie. The Tie Bar: "Cocktail attire is the most common fall wedding dress code." Real Men Real Style: "This is where most fall weddings land. You need a suit and a tie." Its colours are navy, charcoal and mid-grey, plus, in the fall, "a dark brown or deep green if you want to stand out a little."

The dark grey three-piece ($119) is the safest suit on this page. Zapaka sells it as a wedding suit, and The Tie Bar calls charcoal "An elegant color choice for evening and formal events." On the render the cloth has a woolly, flannel-like texture that Zapaka's photo does not show. The photo is a flat dark grey and the listing says polyester, so expect a smooth cloth. The brown monk straps are lighter than John White's rule for a charcoal suit, "Black or dark brown." By day I would keep them; in the evening I would switch to black.

The green three-piece ($119) is the boldest look here: a near-black one-button jacket with wide dark green peak lapels, over a dark green double-breasted waistcoat and dark green trousers. The render matched the shop photo closely. Green is one of The Knot's signature colours for the season, and the waistcoat is the extra layer an October evening wants. It is a lot of suit for a 3 p.m. ceremony, so I would save it for an evening cocktail wedding and leave off the lapel pin and chain from the shop photo. The brown wingtip brogues ($89) work with it; Hockerty pairs its green suit with "black or brown leather shoes."

Semi-formal opens the door to separates. Real Men Real Style: "A suit still works, but so does a sport coat with contrasting trousers." The Tie Bar's October line fits this code and the next: "A tweed or herringbone jacket with a vest will work well for smart casual and rustic weddings."

Rustic, barn and casual still do not mean jeans. The Tie Bar: "A rustic outdoor venue doesn't necessarily mean the wedding will be casual." Real Men Real Style: "Barn and farm weddings still want a jacket." The Knot's casual line for fall: "a tweed sport coat with nice chinos and a denim dress shirt can be a real showstopper." The men's section of our guide to [casual dresses for wedding](/blog/casual-wedding-attire/) guests covers the warm-weather version of this code.

The tweed look is a khaki tweed jacket ($79) over a brown tweed waistcoat ($49), with brown wingtip brogues ($89). It is the jacket and vest The Tie Bar describes, and the look on this page I would wear most often. Two things on the render are not part of it. Both pieces are sold alone, so the grey trousers are the try-on's, and the black shirt and grey tie come from the waistcoat's shop photo. I would wear it with grey wool trousers and a light blue or white shirt, the way Real Men Real Style builds its semi-formal look: "a brown tweed or navy hopsack jacket over mid-gray wool trousers, with a light blue shirt." Zapaka gives the fabric of both pieces as polyester, so this is the look of tweed rather than its weight.

The brown jacket ($89) is corduroy. Zapaka's title only says brown blazer, but the rib shows in its photo and on the render. The Knot likes corduroy this season: "It can be dressed up or down, making it a great pick for formal and casual weddings alike." I would keep it for rustic and casual weddings, where The Tie Bar notes that a harvest-themed couple may ask for exactly this: "relaxed fabrics like flannel and corduroy may be requested." The dark brown trousers on the render are the try-on's, since the jacket is sold alone. With grey flannel trousers or chinos you already own, a white shirt and the brown monk straps, the whole outfit costs $178.

## Where the guides disagree

| Question | One answer | The other answer |
|---|---|---|
| A tuxedo at black tie optional? | "Black-tie and black-tie optional, the most formal dress codes, require a tuxedo" (The Knot) | "If you have a tuxedo, wear it. If you don't, wear your darkest, most formal suit" (Real Men Real Style) |
| Tweed at a cocktail wedding? | For cocktail "(or really any dress code other than formal or black-tie), consider making it your fabric of choice" (The Knot) | "For cocktail or formal weddings, stick with a smoother fabric like flannel or worsted wool" (Real Men Real Style); tweed "can look heavy at a formal evening event" (Jos. A. Bank) |
| A black suit? | "Navy, charcoal and black are great options" (King & Bay) | Avoid "all-black attire" (The Tie Bar); "Save black for black-tie-optional events" (Jos. A. Bank) |
| A coloured tuxedo? | "fall is perfect for burgundy or plum tuxedos" (The Knot) | "Colorful tuxedos are trendy but can quickly look outdated" (The Tie Bar) |
| Linen in the fall? | "For those attending a daytime wedding, consider a linen suit in a seasonal shade like olive green or beige" (Hockerty) | Avoid "lightweight summer fabrics like cotton or linen suits" (The Tie Bar); skip linen in early and late fall alike (Real Men Real Style) |
| Loafers with a dinner suit? | The Knot's fall picks put velvet loafers under a plum tuxedo | "Avoid loafers for black tie or morning dress" (John White) |

Here is where I come down.

Black tie optional: if you own a tuxedo, wear it. If you do not, I would not rent one for this; a charcoal or midnight navy suit, a white shirt, a dark tie and black oxfords meet the code. Real Men Real Style adds the condition that matters: "Don't treat 'optional' as permission to go lighter or more casual."

Tweed: by day, at a vineyard or a barn, I side with The Knot. In a hotel ballroom at 8 p.m., a smooth charcoal or navy looks better, and so does the flannel Real Men Real Style recommends.

Black: in the evening, yes. By day, I would choose charcoal. Real Men Real Style: "Black is for evening. In daylight, charcoal or navy looks better and more appropriate."

Colour: a burgundy or green velvet jacket at a black-tie evening, yes. A plum tuxedo as a guest, only if you know the couple will enjoy it. The Tie Bar's line on accessories is the safer way to bring in colour: "Accessorizing in fall's rich colors is seasonally appropriate and encouraged."

Linen: early September, maybe, if you live where it is still summer. The Tie Bar notes that in September "Daytime temperatures will still be warm, particularly in southern, western, or coastal regions." From October, no.

## September is not November

Real Men Real Style: "Early fall and late fall are two different seasons." The Tie Bar walks through them month by month. September is a transition. "October is the Goldilocks month when it comes to staying comfortable." And "In November, dressing for warmth is the priority."

The cloth follows the month. For September to mid-October, Real Men Real Style suggests "a medium-weight worsted wool, roughly 9 to 11 oz." For late October and November, "step up to 11 oz and heavier. Wool flannel and tweed live here." Zapaka gives no weight for any of its cloths, so with these pieces the layer under the jacket and the coat over it do more of the work. The waistcoats on this page help.

For the coat, Real Men Real Style is direct: "An overcoat is the right answer for evening and formal weddings," and "Leave the puffer jacket in the car." The Tie Bar's November advice: "A tailored wool, camel hair, or cashmere overcoat is a practical and polished addition to any November wedding dress code." Under the jacket, at semi-formal and below, "A thin merino V-neck or a cardigan under your sport coat adds warmth without bulk." And one detail The Knot does not forget: "it's also the time of year when you'll want to wear socks with your dress shoes or loafers."

If you are going with someone, the dresses change by month too. See our guides to the [October wedding guest dress](/blog/october-wedding-guest-dresses/) and the [November wedding guest dress](/blog/november-wedding-guest-dresses/). A brown suit with a burgundy tie sits well next to anything from our [burgundy fall wedding guest dresses](/blog/burgundy-wedding-guest-dresses/).

## Shoes and boots

Jos. A. Bank's rule covers most fall weddings: "Brown leather shoes are the default for a fall wedding, with black kept for formal evening events." John White gives the pairings by suit: for navy, "Dark brown, tan, or burgundy"; for charcoal, "Black or dark brown"; for black tie, "Black only."

Boots are the fall question. Real Men Real Style: "Fall is the one wedding season where boots can be the right call." Its answer by code: "At semi-formal, rustic, and casual weddings, yes," and "At cocktail weddings, a slim dark leather dress boot can work under the trousers. At black tie, no." King & Bay agrees that "sleek dress boots can also work beautifully for fall weddings," and The Knot suggests Chelsea boots for groomsmen "since they're a bit more cozy." None of our seven looks uses boots. The three pairs here are a cap-toe monk strap, a wingtip brogue and a slip-on.

Two practical points. Suede and wet grass do not mix: "Rain and wet grass will ruin untreated suede." And if you switch to boots, take them to the tailor, because "Boots and dress shoes need different trouser lengths."

## What I wouldn't wear

None of the seven looks above, as long as each one goes to the right wedding. The list is about everything around them.

- A linen or seersucker suit after September. The Tie Bar's list of what to avoid starts with "lightweight summer fabrics like cotton or linen suits."
- A black suit at an afternoon ceremony. Real Men Real Style lists "Wearing a black suit to an afternoon wedding" among the mistakes it sees every year.
- Anything white or ivory. Jos. A. Bank: "As a guest, avoid white and ivory and any color reserved for the wedding party."
- A puffer over a suit. If it is cold enough for a coat, it is cold enough for a proper one.
- Every fall colour at once. Real Men Real Style: "Burgundy tie, orange pocket square, mustard socks, and a brown suit is a costume. Pick one accent."
- Jeans, unless the couple asks for them. The Tie Bar says some couples do ask for "jeans and cowboy boots for a barn wedding," and then it wants a blazer on top. Otherwise, Real Men Real Style's reason holds: "you can't make jeans look dressier."
- The white-soled slip-ons from the navy look, at a black-tie-optional wedding. They are fine with the corduroy jacket; under satin lapels they look like an afterthought.

## Questions people ask

### What should a man wear to a fall wedding?

A suit in a fall colour (brown, deep green, charcoal or navy) in wool, flannel or tweed, with a shirt and tie and brown leather shoes. A tuxedo if the invitation says black tie. For a rustic or casual wedding, a tweed or corduroy jacket with wool trousers or chinos.

### What are the best fall wedding suit colors?

Navy, charcoal and mid-grey are the safe base; brown, olive and deep green are the fall colours. Add burgundy, rust or forest green in the tie or pocket square, one accent at a time. Keep black for the evening.

### Can men wear boots to a fall wedding?

Yes at semi-formal, rustic and casual weddings, in sleek leather or suede: Chelsea boots or chukkas. At a cocktail wedding, a slim dark leather dress boot under the trousers can work. Not at black tie.

### Is a black suit OK for a fall wedding?

For an evening wedding, yes. For a daytime ceremony, charcoal or navy is the better choice. The Tie Bar advises against all-black outfits, and Jos. A. Bank keeps black for black-tie-optional events.

### Can I wear a brown suit to a fall wedding?

Yes. Brown is the colour most guides tie to the season. Wear it with a light blue or white shirt and a burgundy or green tie at a cocktail or semi-formal wedding. Real Men Real Style would skip it at black tie optional.

### Can I wear tweed to a fall wedding?

Yes at semi-formal, rustic and casual weddings, and The Knot allows it at a cocktail wedding too. For a formal evening, a smoother wool or flannel looks more polished. Tweed is too casual for black tie.

### Do I need a tuxedo for a black tie optional wedding?

Not if you don't own one, although The Knot says one is required. Without a tuxedo, wear your darkest suit, charcoal or midnight navy, with a white shirt, a dark tie and black oxfords.

### What should a man wear to a fall wedding with no dress code?

A suit in navy, charcoal or mid-grey. Real Men Real Style: "When in doubt, wear a suit." You can take the tie off if everyone else is in sport coats, but you cannot dress jeans up.
