Key takeaways

- Cocktail attire sits between semi-formal and formal. Some guides treat it as the same thing as semi-formal; the stricter ones put it a small step above.
- For women: a knee-length, tea-length or midi dress in satin, chiffon, lace or something embellished. A dressy jumpsuit or separates work too. Not a gown, not cotton.
- For men: a suit and a tie. A few guides call the tie optional, and none I read calls it a mistake. No tuxedo.
- After 5 pm, go darker and shinier. Before, lighter fabrics, pastels and prints are fine.
- Skip white. In Zola's etiquette survey, 96 percent disapproved of it.

David's Bridal calls cocktail attire "the most common dress code on wedding invitations right now", and sums it up as "polished, not formal." The Knot gives that title to semi-formal, which several guides treat as the same code. Either way, "polished, not formal" is a good start and not quite enough, because the guides that explain it do not agree on hemlines, ties or black, and guests notice. In a ThredUp survey of 1,443 American wedding guests this spring, nearly one in three said they lacked the confidence to read modern dress codes correctly, and 62 percent said they spend three hours or more looking for a single outfit.

This page tries to save you most of those three hours. It gives the definition, the points where the definitions part ways, and eight outfits you can buy, put on our mannequins by the same try-on you can use on your own photo. The pieces come from Zapaka, the shop our catalogue carries today. Under every render: the pieces, their price when we last checked, a link to try them on yourself, and a marked link to the shop.

## What cocktail attire means, in one paragraph

The Knot places it at "a formality level that falls between semi-formal attire and formal attire", and lists "jumpsuits or mini, knee-length and midi cocktail dresses" for women, and a suit and tie or a tailored blazer with dress pants for men. The etiquette advisor Brides quotes, María Lucrecia Argüello, narrows the dress to "a knee-length, tea-length, or midi dress" and adds that "this is not the time to wear a gala gown or a short mini skirt." On fabric, the stylist Gabrielle Hurwitz tells The Knot to avoid cotton and pick "silk satin, silk chiffon, jacquard or even something beaded and embellished." For men, The Black Tux lists "a tailored suit, dress shirt, tie, and leather dress shoes", with no tuxedo. Sherri Hill's version is the easiest to remember: "attire that you could wear to an upscale restaurant and still feel like you fit in."

The black dress above is that definition in one piece: lace scattered with sequins, a halter neck, an open back, and rhinestone straps on the sandals that pick up the same light. One thing to check before you order. Zapaka sells it as a midi, and on both our mannequins the try-on let it fall close to the ankle. Mid-calf is the length you want here, so look at the size chart for where the hem lands on you.

## Where the guides disagree

| Question | The stricter answer | The looser answer |
|---|---|---|
| The same as semi-formal? | No, dressier. Brides calls cocktail "a small step above semi-formal"; The Black Tux says it "sits higher on the ladder" | Close enough. Zola: "sometimes also referred to as semi-formal"; The Knot's guide for men calls it "the evening counterpart to semi-formal attire" |
| A long dress? | "Steer clear of floor-length dresses" (The Knot) | Fine in a less formal fabric (Brides); Sherri Hill: "Long, solid-colored dresses are perfect for evening weddings" |
| A mini? | "Not the time to wear a gala gown or a short mini skirt," says Argüello in Brides; Generation Tux also rules out minis | The Knot lists a mini next to knee-length and midi; Pearl by David's suggests "a chic mini or midi dress" |
| A tie? | "For the men, all experts agree: A suit and tie are required" (Brides); Esquire calls it "a must-have" | "They're entirely optional" (Generation Tux); David's Bridal calls it optional "depending on the formality level" |
| Black? | Sherri Hill says to "check with the organizers" first; Black Lapel tells men to avoid black at daytime weddings | Adrianna Papell: "perfect cocktail attire for a wedding"; The Knot: "classic LBDs will always be safe bets" |
| Loafers? | "Too casual" (a Black Tux resource page) | "An excellent spring and summer option" (The Black Tux's own guide to cocktail attire for men) |

The last row is my favourite: one menswear brand, two pages, two answers. When good sources split like this, the time on the invitation decides, the same way it does for [semi formal attire for a wedding](/blog/semi-formal-wedding-attire/). The Black Tux draws the line at 5 pm: before it, lighter colours; after it, "darker, more formal options." At an evening reception, take the stricter column. At a lunch in a garden, the looser one is fine.

## Evening cocktail: dark, shiny, off the floor

Vogue describes the evening version well: "Darker colors like navy, black, or jewel tones are common, along with luxe fabrics like satin, velvet, or silk." The Knot goes further and tells guests to "steer clear of patterns and opt for solid-colored pieces in darker shades." Sparkle is welcome. Brides allows sequins or feathers "so long as your dress doesn't sweep the floor", and Reviewed adds a sensible limit: nothing so flashy that it distracts from the ceremony.

That is why the black dress leads this page. The sequins are scattered rather than solid, so it reads as evening and not as a gala. The pink satin dress below is the lighter evening option, for a spring or summer reception, with sequin flowers on the skirt. It raises the same length question as the black one: Zapaka sells a midi, and the try-on drew it to the ankle on our size 8 mannequin. In satin, at that length, it starts to look like the gown Argüello warns about. Mid-calf keeps it on the right side.

## Cocktail attire for a fall wedding

The Knot's fall guide asks for "midi dresses, high-low hemlines and jumpsuits in rich earth tones like forest green, burnt orange, maroon and espresso brown, or moody floral prints", and calls velvet "ideal for late-season formal events." David's Bridal names the same palette: rust, burgundy, forest green and deep plum.

The dark green velvet dress above is all of that at once: forest green, a moody floral print, velvet, half sleeves and a belt. Zapaka sells it as a mother-of-the-bride dress, which says more about the shop's filing than about the dress. It is also the longest dress on this page, ankle length on our mannequin. The Knot would call that too long. Brides allows a longer dress in a less formal fabric, and velvet is not one; the print and the half sleeves pull it toward a day dress, but only so far. I would wear it to an evening wedding in November, where velvet belongs, with the black bow heels, and make sure the hem clears the floor. For a strict cocktail invitation, a knee-length velvet is the safer version of the same idea. As in our October guide, the try-on drew the velvet flatter than it really is.

Reviewed's practical advice for fall is to bring a jacket or a sweater for after sunset. For more fall looks, month by month, see our guides to [October wedding guest dresses](/blog/october-wedding-guest-dresses/) and [fall wedding guest dresses](/blog/fall-wedding-guest-dresses/).

## Summer cocktail dresses for a wedding

In summer the fabric changes before the length does. Brides recommends "light and airy fabrics such as chiffon, linen, or organza", and lists a floral maxi, a pastel midi or knee-length dress, or a jumpsuit. David's Bridal adds georgette, bright colours and bold prints. The Knot's caveat still holds: laid-back materials suit outdoor or daytime weddings, and "an evening wedding at a five-star hotel would likely call for deeper hues and richer textures."

For a daytime cocktail wedding, Vogue suggests "softer tones, pastels, or floral prints", and "a shorter or chic tea-length dress." Both dresses below fit.

The sage chiffon halter has a rosette at the neck, ruffles down the front and a slit, and it moves the way a garden wedding wants a dress to move. I paired it with apricot ankle-strap sandals. The lilac tulle midi on the size 12 mannequin has embroidered flowers over the whole skirt and a V-neck. With gold sandals on a low heel, it is the outfit on this page I would pick for a lawn, where thin heels sink.

A suit and a tie, and the colour follows the clock. The Black Tux puts grey, tan and medium blue in daylight and navy, charcoal and black at night, with one shortcut: "When in doubt, a navy suit works beautifully for both." Esquire adds that black "can lean a little severe." For the tie, the Tie Bar suggests "solid silk and subtle patterned ties for evening events" and bolder patterns, like paisleys and florals, in the afternoon. Its own FAQ admits a suit without a tie is now accepted, then says a tie is "highly recommended." I would wear one.

Zapaka sells the suit above as dark grey. The try-on made it a medium grey, which is the daytime end of The Black Tux's scale, so this render is a lunch-wedding look. The listing says two pieces, but the shop photo shows a waistcoat, and the render kept it; check what ships. The brown double monk straps work with grey by day. At the formal end of cocktail, GQ expects a dark suit with "a pair of polished black Oxfords or brogues", and our catalogue has none in stock today.

The rest is quick. A white linen pocket square never fails; The Black Tux calls it "the little black dress of men's accessories." A tuxedo is welcome at black tie optional, the same brand notes, but not at a cocktail wedding. The jacket stays on: Brides quotes Alena Kate Pettitt, for whom the only acceptable time to take off jacket and tie is "after the formalities have ended and the sun has gone down", or once the groom or the senior male attendants have removed theirs.

The white dress is sold as a cocktail dress, and it is one. It is still the one thing on this page I would not wear to a wedding. In Zola's etiquette survey, wearing white drew 96 percent disapproval, and Zola calls it "the ultimate no-no."

The burgundy mini is a subtler miss. Zapaka files it under homecoming, and on the size 12 mannequin it looks the part: a corset bodice, three tiers of satin, and a hem at mid-thigh. The colour is not the problem. In the same Zola survey, 69 percent of couples said red is fine on a guest, and the try-on made this burgundy a brighter red than the shop photo shows. The shape is the problem. The Knot allows short cocktail dresses "as long as they fall on the fancy side", and this one falls on the school-dance side. If you love a mini, pick a plain one in a heavy fabric and keep it for an evening reception.

The other misses are simple. Jeans: The Knot says a cocktail wedding "isn't the appropriate time." A cotton sundress: Brides says to "shy away from anything cotton or spandex." And a gown that sweeps the floor, which belongs to a formal invitation.

## Questions people ask

### What is cocktail attire for a wedding?

A dress code between semi-formal and formal. For women, a knee-length, tea-length or midi dress in a dressy fabric, a dressy jumpsuit or dressy separates. For men, a suit, a dress shirt, a tie and leather dress shoes.

### Is cocktail attire the same as semi-formal?

Almost. Zola and Brides' cocktail guide use the two terms interchangeably. Brides' dress-code guide and The Black Tux put cocktail a small step higher. Wear what works for cocktail and you are covered for both; our guide to [semi formal attire for a wedding](/blog/semi-formal-wedding-attire/) has the other side.

### Can I wear a long dress to a cocktail wedding?

It depends on the fabric. The Knot says to avoid floor length. Brides allows a longer dress in a less formal fabric, and Sherri Hill likes long solid dresses for evening weddings. A floor-length satin or sequin gown overdresses the invitation.

### Can I wear black to a cocktail attire wedding?

Yes, especially in the evening. Adrianna Papell calls black "perfect cocktail attire for a wedding", and The Knot calls the classic little black dress a safe bet. For men, a navy or charcoal suit is safer than solid black, above all by day.

### Do men have to wear a tie for cocktail attire?

Most guides say yes, and Brides says all its experts agree. Generation Tux and David's Bridal call it optional. A tie is never wrong at a cocktail wedding, and leaving it at home sometimes is.

### Can I wear a jumpsuit to a cocktail wedding?

Yes. The Knot lists jumpsuits next to cocktail dresses, and Brides lists a pantsuit or trousers with a dressy top. Pick a fabric with some finish and a dressy shoe.

### What shoes go with cocktail attire?

For women, a heel, a dressy flat or a dressy sandal; The Knot notes that "heels aren't a requirement." For men, leather oxfords, derbies or loafers; The Black Tux calls black cap-toe oxfords the most formal option.

### Is a tuxedo too much for cocktail attire?

Usually. The Black Tux says tuxedos are "too much for the cocktail attire dress code." If the invitation says black tie optional, a tuxedo is welcome.
