Key takeaways

- Burgundy works at a fall wedding, at every dress code. Every fall guide I read for this page lists it among the season's colours, and two suggest it in place of bright red.
- Check the bridesmaids first. Burgundy is one of the most ordered fall bridesmaid colours. If they are wearing it, choose lace, a print or a textured velvet, or move to plum.
- The dress code picks the fabric: velvet, lace or heavy satin to the floor for formal and black tie, a shorter dress in crepe or chiffon for cocktail and semi-formal.
- Shoes: gold or champagne to warm the colour, black for an evening look, nude to keep the dress in front. Not white.
- For men: a burgundy tie with a navy or charcoal suit, or a burgundy dinner jacket at a formal evening wedding.

Can you wear burgundy to a fall wedding as a guest? Yes. It is one of the safest colours of the season, as long as the bridesmaids are not wearing it. Dress for the Wedding puts the whole question in one sentence: "The only reason not to wear a burgundy dress as a wedding guest in the fall is if you know it's one of the wedding colors and you might be mistaken for one of the wedding party members or bridesmaids." Once that is checked, the dress code decides the fabric and the length, and the hour decides the shoes. The guides I read for this page agree on the colour. They disagree on nude shoes, on chiffon, on what to do when you cannot find out what the bridal party is wearing, and even on what "burgundy" means.

Fall is the busiest season for weddings. According to The Knot, "35% of couples get married from September through November," and October ties with June as the most popular month, each "accounting for 16% of weddings." The fall guides expect burgundy. The Knot's fall guide quotes Kristen Schnars of Lulus expecting "deep jewel tones like fuchsia, emerald, mustard, burgundy and plum," and E! Online writes that the shade "is back for fall 2026." Couples like it too. Zola: "Many 2026 couples are anchoring bold colors, like cobalt blue or burgundy, with timeless neutrals like sage or taupe." That is the catch, and it gets its own section below. For the season as a whole, see our guides to [fall wedding guest dresses](/blog/fall-wedding-guest-dresses/), the [October wedding guest dress](/blog/october-wedding-guest-dresses/) and the [November wedding guest dress](/blog/november-wedding-guest-dresses/).

## Burgundy at a fall wedding, in one paragraph

Burgundy looks dressed up without looking like black. Azazie: "Its depth suggests formality without the severity of black, making it versatile across different dress codes and times of year." Kleinfeld calls it "rich without feeling heavy, romantic without trying too hard, and endlessly versatile across venues and dress codes." It is also the usual answer for a guest who wants to wear red. Dress for the Wedding: "Since wearing bright red to a wedding can be controversial, we love burgundy dresses as a tasteful alternative." Azazie's table of colours to avoid gives "Burgundy, wine, deep red" as the safe alternative to bright red.

The lace dress above is the one I would buy for a fall wedding before I knew the dress code. It is a burgundy lace sheath with a boat neck, wide sheer sleeves that fall to the elbow like a short cape, a gathered waist and a hem at the ankle, and it kept the same shape on both mannequins. Zapaka files it as a mother-of-the-bride dress, at $149. I count the lace in its favour, for a reason that comes up in the next section: the bridal party's burgundy is usually a plain fabric. The gold sandals ($37) follow advice The Knot quotes from Apri Brown of Amsale: "bridesmaid dresses are typically worn with nude heels so opt for something unexpected. Strappy metallic sandals add a touch of glamour while pointed-toe pumps give off a sophisticated vibe." They are open-toed, which is fine indoors. For an outdoor ceremony late in the season, The Knot's fall guide asks for "warm layers and closed-toe shoes."

## Check the bridesmaids first

This is the one real risk with burgundy, and it is not a small one. Kennedy Blue, which sells bridesmaid dresses, looked at "more than 100,000 fabric swatch orders alongside live dress sales" for its 2026 colour report and found that "Maroon and Bordeaux are our top-selling reds, while Burgundy is the single most-swatched red of the year." Green Wedding Shoes calls wine "one of our all-time favorite color trends for fall bridesmaid dresses." Zapaka sells burgundy bridesmaid dresses too, and two of them are on this page.

Zola's rule is short: "don't wear the same color or colors as the bridesmaids (if you're able, find out this info beforehand)." Azazie gives the reason: "This is especially problematic in photos where you may unintentionally blend in with the official group." Finding out is usually easy. Apri Brown, in The Knot: "the invitation or couple's wedding website displays a mood board or color scheme. So, use that to guide your outfit selection." If the website says nothing, ask a bridesmaid.

If the bridal party is in burgundy, you have two ways out. The Knot's: "a shade in the same color family is okay in a textured fabric or a print." Azazie's, written for mothers of the bride but just as useful to a guest: "If bridesmaids wear burgundy, consider moving to plum or selecting a different tone entirely." If you cannot find out at all, the guides split (first row of the table below). My own rule when I don't know: burgundy with a texture or a print, such as lace, flocked or burnout velvet, or sequins, and never a long dress in plain satin or chiffon, because that is what bridesmaid dresses look like.

## Where the guides disagree

| Question | One answer | The other answer |
|---|---|---|
| You can't find out the bridesmaid colour? | "Avoid popular bridesmaid colors: blush, dusty blue, sage, burgundy" (Azazie) | "The only checks worth making are the universal ones, staying clear of the bridal party's exact color and respecting the code on the invitation" (Jovani) |
| Nude shoes? | "Nude and beige shoes lengthen the leg and keep the dress as the focus" (Jovani); "nude or metallic heels keep the look refined" (Kleinfeld) | "bridesmaid dresses are typically worn with nude heels so opt for something unexpected" (Apri Brown of Amsale, in The Knot) |
| Chiffon in the fall? | "a burgundy midi in crepe or chiffon suits cocktail and semi formal invitations" (Jovani) | For outdoor weddings, The Knot prefers "velvet, brocade and heavy satin" to "ultra-light options like chiffon or linen" |
| Only for fall and winter? | Kennedy Blue, on its reds: "Most requested for fall and winter" | "the right fabric and styling make burgundy appropriate for spring and summer celebrations too" (Azazie) |
| What is burgundy, exactly? | "Burgundy specifically refers to deep red-purple tones, while wine can be lighter and maroon tends toward brown" (Azazie's guest guide) | "Burgundy leans toward brown undertones, plum carries purple notes, and wine sits between the two" (Azazie's mother-of-the-bride guide); for Jovani, "Wine and merlot lean slightly purple" |

On nude shoes I side with The Knot: in burgundy and nude heels, you are one pair of shoes away from the bridal party. The last row is the one to remember when you shop. The same retailer gives two definitions of burgundy and a third shop gives a third, so the names on product pages tell you little. Zapaka calls the men's jacket below "red" and the bridesmaid dress at the bottom of this page "burgundy," and the second is the brighter of the two. Judge the photo, not the name. Azazie adds a warning about light: "Natural lighting reveals the true color of burgundy and plum dresses. Artificial indoor lighting can shift tones significantly." Our renders shift too, as the flocked dress below shows.

## Burgundy at a formal or black-tie fall wedding

The Knot's line for formal and black tie in the fall: "Choose floor-length gowns in heavy silk, satin or velvet and jewel tones like plum, emerald green, navy or burgundy." Jovani agrees: "A floor length burgundy gown in velvet, satin, or beaded fabric is fully at home at a black tie evening." The code is not rare. On The Knot's guest-cost page, "19% of weddings require formal or black-tie attire." Velvet comes up in almost every guide I read. Kleinfeld: "Velvet brings instant richness and depth, making it ideal for evening celebrations and cooler weather."

The burnout velvet gown is the one I would wear to a black-tie evening. It is strapless, with a corset bodice, a pattern cut into the pile and a slit that opens above the knee, at $125. Zapaka sells it as a bridesmaid dress, which says something about how common the colour is in bridal parties. The pattern is what keeps it on the guest side of The Knot's rule about texture. A strapless dress in the fall needs a layer, and The Knot lists "faux-fur stoles" among the layers that "keep you warm during outdoor vows without sacrificing style or formality." I put a short black faux fur jacket ($79) over it and black T-strap block heels ($48) under it. The try-on kept the velvet's sheen and the burnout pattern this time. In our October guide it drew velvet as flat crepe, so check the shop photo anyway.

The flocked dress is the softer formal option, at $169: an off-the-shoulder A-line in sheer tulle covered in velvet flowers, with short sleeves, a tie at the waist and a hem at the ankle on the size 12 mannequin. It is also the clearest case of colour drift on this page. In Zapaka's photo the dress is a dark oxblood, close to brown. On the render it came out a shade redder, with the flowers darker than the ground. Trust the shop's colour here, not ours. The champagne satin slingbacks with a bow ($59) are what Jovani means by heels that "dress the color up for a formal reception." With bare shoulders, it needs the same layer as the velvet gown once you step outside.

## Burgundy at a cocktail or semi-formal wedding

This is the more common invitation. On the same Knot page, "a semi-formal aesthetic is most common (favored by 60% of couples)." The Knot's fall advice for these codes asks for "midi dresses, high-low hemlines and jumpsuits in rich earth tones like forest green, burnt orange, maroon and espresso brown, or moody floral prints." Our guides to [cocktail dress attire for wedding](/blog/cocktail-attire-for-a-wedding/) guests and [semi formal attire for a wedding](/blog/semi-formal-wedding-attire/) cover the codes in full. A midi is the length I would have liked to show you here, and I could not: the only burgundy midi I found in our catalogue is already the hero of our October guide. These two are shorter.

The wine chiffon dress ($119) is ruched across a strapless sweetheart bodice and stops above the knee, with a sheer chiffon layer behind that falls to the knee and a long chiffon scarf tied at the neck. Zapaka files it under homecoming. On the size 8 mannequin it looks like a cocktail dress, and its colour is the closest match to the shop photo on this page, a wine that leans purple. Above the knee is the shortest I would go to a wedding. I matched it with burgundy satin heels with a bow ($61), the tonal option in Azazie's list: "Closed-toe pumps in black, burgundy, or metallics." The fabric is the weak point outdoors, for The Knot's reason in the table. Indoors, in the evening, I would wear it.

The sequin blazer dress ($105) is the warmer short option: long sleeves, double-breasted, with black satin shawl lapels, cuffs and pocket flaps, and a hem at mid-thigh on the size 12 mannequin. Zapaka's title calls it a "maxi" blazer; in its photo and on our render it is a mini. I would keep it for the evening: at a two o'clock ceremony sequins look like a night out, and after dark they suit a cocktail reception. The black pointed block heels with a jewelled bow ($69) pick up the lapels, and they are the "pointed-toe pumps" that Apri Brown puts next to metallic sandals.

## What shoes to wear with a burgundy dress

The guides give four answers, and the looks on this page use all of them. Jovani's is the most complete: "Nude and beige shoes lengthen the leg and keep the dress as the focus, black grounds an evening look, and metallic gold, champagne, or pewter heels dress the color up for a formal reception." Dress for the Wedding would pick "either some neutral, black or metallic gold or pewter shoes." David's Bridal names "nude pumps, metallic gold heels, or classic black shoes depending on the formality and venue," and adds: "Avoid white shoes and overly bright colors that might distract from the celebration."

My order for a fall wedding: gold first, because Jovani is right that gold ends up "warming the shade and suiting fall receptions." Black second, for an evening. Burgundy if the dress is short and you want one long line of colour. Nude last, for The Knot's reason above. Outdoors, the heel matters more than the colour. The Knot: "Avoid thin stiletto heels that sink into garden paths or leave you feeling unsteady. Instead, opt for chunky block heels, dressy wedges or sleek leather dress boots." The bow heels with the wine dress are thin stilettos; on a lawn I would swap them for the black block heels.

For the rest, Jovani suggests "a clutch in gold, black, or matching wine." On jewellery, Kleinfeld: "Gold jewelry softens it, silver gives it a cooler edge."

## Burgundy for men

The Knot's men's fall guide suggests "swapping your classic blue or black suit with an option in burgundy, brown or olive green." For a guest, a tie is the easier way in. David's Bridal: "a navy or charcoal suit with a burgundy, deep green, or camel tie hits the season without trying too hard." The Knot's tie rule, from its guide to burgundy suits: "You can even wear a tie that's a shade of burgundy or red as long as it doesn't match the shade of the suit." At a formal evening wedding, The Knot goes further: "For black-tie optional or formal dress codes, a charcoal, navy or even dark maroon velvet dinner jacket paired with tailored trousers works well."

Our catalogue has no maroon velvet dinner jacket, but it has this one: burgundy jacquard with a paisley weave and black satin shawl lapels, sold with black trousers for $126. Zapaka calls it red. In the shop photo and on the render it is burgundy. The shop photo comes with a burgundy bow tie and the try-on kept it. This is an outfit for a formal evening. At a daytime or semi-formal wedding it is too much, and the navy suit with a burgundy tie is the better answer.

The shoes are what I would change. The only black men's shoes we carry are casual suede slip-ons ($89) with a white rubber sole, and the try-on added white socks. With a dinner jacket I want black socks and a polished black shoe. The Knot's burgundy-suit guide says "When it comes to shoes with burgundy suits, go with browns," but that is advice for a whole burgundy suit; with black trousers and a shawl collar, I would wear black. The bridal party check applies to men as well. Azazie: "Avoid matching the bridesmaid dresses or groomsmen attire." If the groomsmen are in burgundy, wear the tie, not the jacket.

## What I wouldn't wear

This is a bridal party dress, and Zapaka sells it as one: a strapless satin mermaid gown, plain from bust to hem, with a satin scarf at the neck, listed as a convertible bridesmaid dress at $129. Zapaka calls it burgundy. In its photo and on the render it is closer to cherry red, which makes it a worse choice. If the bridesmaids are in burgundy, a long plain satin dress in their shade puts you in their photos, which is what Azazie warns about: "Wearing the same color as the bridal party creates confusion and makes it appear you're part of the wedding party." If they are not, it is still close to the bright red that Azazie's table says "Steals spotlight" and that Dress for the Wedding calls "controversial."

The other misses are simpler: white shoes, which David's Bridal rules out; thin stilettos at an outdoor ceremony; chiffon on a windy lawn in November; and a burgundy dress bought before anyone checked the wedding website.

## Questions people ask

### Can you wear burgundy to a fall wedding?

Yes. It is one of the most common fall guest colours and works at every dress code. Check first that the bridesmaids are not wearing it; the wedding website or a bridesmaid can tell you.

### What if the bridesmaids are wearing burgundy?

Switch to another colour, such as plum, or wear burgundy only in a textured fabric or a print. The Knot says "a shade in the same color family is okay in a textured fabric or a print." Avoid a long plain dress in their shade.

### What colour shoes go with a burgundy dress at a wedding?

Gold, champagne or pewter to dress it up, black for an evening wedding, nude to keep the dress in front, or burgundy for a tonal look. Avoid white. At an outdoor ceremony, choose a block heel.

### Should I wear gold or silver jewellery with burgundy?

Either. Gold warms the colour and suits a fall reception; silver cools it and looks more formal. Jovani calls gold "the classic metal."

### Can I wear a burgundy dress to a black-tie wedding?

Yes, if it is floor length and in velvet, satin or a beaded fabric. The Knot lists burgundy among the jewel tones for formal and black-tie fall weddings.

### Is burgundy the same as maroon or wine?

Not exactly, and the shops do not agree on the difference. Maroon and oxblood usually lean brown, wine and merlot lean purple, and burgundy moves between them depending on who names it. Judge the photo, not the label.

### Is burgundy only for fall and winter weddings?

It is most popular in fall and winter, but Azazie says the right fabric makes it work "for spring and summer celebrations too." The same guide's rule of thumb: "Chiffon burgundy feels summery, while velvet reads winter."

### What should men wear in burgundy to a fall wedding?

A navy or charcoal suit with a burgundy tie, at most dress codes. At a formal evening wedding, a burgundy or maroon dinner jacket with black trousers and black shoes. Skip burgundy if the groomsmen are wearing it.
